4 Peaks Racing

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 26m 52s
Overall Rank = 112/162
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 18/26
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early, ate a banana and bagel. Arrive 1:15 before race to setup and get familiar with the area.
Event warmup:

Stretching with light jog / walking.
Swim
  • 09m 48s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm not a good swimmer at all. The pool was full of swimmers and had to swim around them, and them around me. It was very disturbing for a new guy, but that's life. My form, rhythm were completely thrown off. Had to quit bilateral breathing and do every right stroke. Had a good rhythm in a few of the lengths but otherwise, kind of chaotic.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to get better at swimming. Better form and breathing, and getting better at swimming with others around causing choppy water.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Just had a MTB so just put on my running shoes to ride. No wetsuit, just rode in jammers and shirt. Went smoothly with helmet, glasses, shoes, running belt, etc. However, noticed about 1 mile in I forgot to put my bottle back in the bike cage...no liquid on the ride. Not a big problem with only a 12 miler but could have been a bigger mistake.
What would you do differently?:

Need to focus a bit better, a little disoriented and rushed feeling. Need to specifically practice transitions. Also, bring a separate bottle to drink from and don't use my bike bottle except on the ride.
Bike
  • 49m 43s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt that I pushed on my MTB about as hard as I could without killing my run. Big mistake in forgetting my bottle, but don't think it negatively impacted my performance overall.
What would you do differently?:

Get a road bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Fell off the bike on dismount (oops). Not bad really but cost me a couple second, just was more awkward than anything. Already had running shoes on, so only had to take off helmet, turn number belt around and take a swig of Gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Practice bike dismounts!!
Run
  • 27m 21s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was good, actually pretty ok with it. Pace was about the best I could do on my first tri and a new course.
What would you do differently?:

Practice bricks and hills. I'll do this again next year and push it a bit harder up the hill.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking, stretching, etc.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My first race. First time on that course. Swim is not very good. Need to get a road bike. Mainly more engine work.

Event comments:

The race environment was awesome. It was a relaxed atmosphere, and was quite fun. Muscle Milk was really the only vendor, so not much in the way of post race activities. Not sure if that's normal or I expected too much, but was really quite limited.
Loved the race, had a great time, and hopefully my first in a long line of tris!

Course: Started with a slight downhill on sidewalks. Downhill was nice to work out the rubbery legs. Very soon though it was all uphill. Not steep but was probably a good 1.5-2 solid miles of uphill. Wasn't expecting that, but was able to chug through. Felt ok on the run, but didn't want to push it too hard because of the long uphill.

Congrats on your first race and welcome to the triathlete ranks.  Everyone makes rookie mistakes their first couple of times out (like the water bottle).  Lord knows I made my fair share of mine in my first  few races.  That sort of thing disappears with repetition.  Keep it up!
