Subject: FELT B16 sizing

Hi All,

I am new to Tri and I got after long research, consideration and hesitation a Felt B16. I'm 6'1, 182 lbs. The Fitter at the store told me 54 fits perfect for me and pulled it out. I asked him if not a 56 fit me better. He said it depends on my riding habits. He respond that the felt bikes are longer and a 54 will be fine.

I felt comfortable on it at the test ride and bought it without thinking anymore of a 56 frame.

As I said I'm new in this and I trusted the bike shop. I never thought about it due to my mountain bike size is 52 and my road bike is an 56.

The fitter adjusted/fitted me to the bike and after I took the bike out for a sprint ride today, I had soreness in the hamstrings. I practiced a lot lately and never had soreness.

After registering my bike at the felt web page I coincidentally checked the Size Chart at their web page. After reading it, it seems I would have needed an 56/58 frame instead of 54.

I'm now worried that he fitted me to a shorter (wrong) bike. My seam is 32"...Frown

Any input is greatly appreciated....

Did the fitter measure you before suggesting the 54?  As it sounds like he had other sizes to choose from, he wasn't motivated to sell you just what he had.

other than that- it's hard for us to tell.  6'1" would normally be on the larger size, but every person is different.  And, the fitter is correct about the Felt's being a little longer in the reach.

He did measure me before the fitting. He said that the crotch should not hit the bar. I have short legs in comparison to my torso.

There's no standard what a size denomination means, nor how a frame is measured, so the fact that you have a 56cm road bike and a 52cm MTB is irrelevant.

If you have a professional bike fit with a reputable fitter, then trust their knowledge. Sizing charts online is almost useless... it may help avoid the extreme mistakes (someone 6'1" buying an 47cm Felt for example), but it's very common that you may be a size up or down from those sizing charts, and that's if the brand/model fits you to start with.

If you have a 32" inseam- (crotch to floor, not pant leg), then yes, that's short for someone of your height.  and seemingly suitable for a size 54 (I'm no fitter, but I ride a felt and know how my 52" bike fits me, and I've got a 31.5" leg).  If you went to a bigger frame- you'd probably be able to sit on it, but you'd need to lower the seat more.  Now, your seat wouldn't be as high above the armrests, and with your presumably long shoulder to elbow distance, you wouldn't be able to get your head quite as low.  So, the smaller frame is allowing you to get that big long torso of yours out of the wind.  The smaller frame will likely give you a more agressive position.

But- we here really haven't a clue, as we haven't seen you on your bike. Go out and ride 1000 miles and go back for a re-fit.  Give it some time.  Talk to your fitter.

Thanks guys! As I said I was more confused about the online statement than not trusting the fitter. Well, I had a concern and I brought it up.

I talked today to the fitter and he said that I will have a more aggressive position on the 54. He adjusted the seat post a bit higher and slid the seat minimal back. Now I'm more comfortable on the bike.

He gave me as well a 30 day warranty if I’m not satisfied I can bring it back and get the 56.

Thanks again for your advice and sorry….

Absolutely no need to apologize! You started a GREAT thread that I really hope lots of people read. There's much to learn from it.

... and you've found yourself a good fitter. Anyone willing to stick out their neck and put the trust in their knowledge is worth hanging on to. If you bring the bike back in 30 days and you have ridden it, they will take a financial hit on it. That means they are very sure that they have sold you the right brand/model/size and that they are looking at you not as a one time sale, but rather a long term investment.
