Pre-race routine:

Woke up with stomach issues so didn't eat my usual pre-race sandwich. Had a clif bar and most of a banana during the hour drive.
Event warmup:

Jogged about a mile to get used to the cold air. Jogged in place during the final speech before the start so that nothing had a chance to tighten up.
Swim
  • 07m 25s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was very happy with my swim. This was a reverse tri, which means the swim is last. I knew I was first female getting into pool but I had flashbacks of last year when three girls passed me in the swim. Thankfully, I was able to get in the groove and enjoy the swim. Big improvement from last year's 9:36 in this race. I was lucky in that I had pretty clear sailing. About ten minutes later the pool was a zoo.
What would you do differently?:

AFter panicking in the pool in a few races last year I tend to be pretty conservative. I should start pushing myself a little more in the water.

Comments:

Here's where I had the problem. With the cold weather, I had decided not to pre-clip my shoes. Well, when I went to mount my bike, the chain came off. I panicked, and frozen, numb fingers didn't help. It took two minutes to get it back on. I also lost a glove in the chain escapade and had to ride Michael Jackson style. The left hand froze! Anyway, once I got things sorted out I rocked my bike (averaged around 20mph). Still had the quickest bike split of the ladies but I would have been fairly close to the fastest guys if that hadn't happened.
What would you do differently?:

Pre-clip. I kicked my pedal backwards when I mounted which resulted in the chain falling. Otherwise, my bike fitness felt surprisingly good for this early in the season and it went well.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Another issue- attached chip over sock and I could not get my sock off. I had to take off the whole chip, get the sock off, and put the chip back together. Numb fingers= a minute loss.
What would you do differently?:

Not that.
Run
  • 11m 58s
  • 1.86 miles
  • 06m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was ok. Tried to just maintain 5K pace. Asthma/ chest problems resulted in gagging halfway through. I need to put a stop to that, because it happens frequently. Might play around with my inhalers and see if that helps.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, Just need to start intensifying my speed workouts.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out in the pool area for food and awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The chain problem and the sock problem. I estimate they cost me 2-3 minutes. My husband beat me by two and a half minutes, so it could have been a real race between us!

Event comments:

I LOVE the Headfirst Performance events!!!

Ah man, without those snafus, it really WOULD have been a race with your husband!!  Dang, you did great, and you would have KILLED it if not for frozen fingers, chain falling off, etc.... next time let's go for first OVERALL everyone!!
