My wife has orders, we'll be there in two months. Looking at homes in the Arlington area. How's the biking? Safe or should I plan on a ton of trainer rides. Pools? Running is easy. Tri clubs?Any info you can give me would be great. See you soon.Chris

Chris, the multisport and fitness scene is good and getting better all the time. Germantown & Bartlett have the most bike lanes, and Memphis has made several most improved lists as far as being biking friendly, after years of nothing. Arlington has just started adding some bike lanes, but they are a really small municipality. I like in Bartlett and ride through Arlington into the country all the time. Like any place there are places that are tough to ride, but overall there aren't too many areas to avoid, and there are generally safe alternate routes to get anywhere you want to go. I typically feel safe most everywhere I ride.Pools on that side of town are going to be limited to Bartlett Recreation Center (municpal owned fitness center) and a YMCA in Cordova. There are other Y's around town, Germantown has a fitness center, Jewish Community Center, Lifetime Fitness in Collierville and the University of Memphis all have pools. Masters programs at each one.Running is a breeze with tons of great trails around town as well as good roads out in the suburbs. Memphis Runners Track Club is one of the largest road runners clubs in the country. There are probably four or five tri/multisport clubs. Some more formal, some more casual. There is Memphis Thunder (club that I am a part of), Los Locos, Terrapins, Journeymen Multisport, GI Jess's Warriors for a Cause and maybe a couple of others. S2F Events puts on most of the local multisport events (from sprint to HIM), most within a 3 hour drive - generally less than 2 hours. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me or shoot me an e-mail.Welcome to Memphis

Hey guys, just about a month away. I've been shopping around for a new ride, looking at a P3. Do you know of a shop with any in stock. I figured I would ask what you know before I start emailing the different shops. Not worried about the year 2010-13 is fine. Reason I ask is my shop here has a couple and the deals are okay, but it would better for me to pick one up where I'll be living.

Will do.  I'll be making a quick trip out on the 18th for an interview and to pick up keys to the new rental.  I'll stop by R & B.  Looks like a ton more options than what I have here in Virginia Beach.  Thanks.

Victory Bicycle Studio is doing a lot of great things and they carry the full Cervelo line. Bike World also has Cervelos.

There is a place called Bike World in Collierville, TN and they carry Cervelo.  Good shop too

Hi Papson,

My husband and I bought our bikes at Bike World in Collierville back in 2009.  The guys there are great.  We moved to Cordova two weeks ago.  I'm swimming at the Cordova YMCA and at the University of Memphis pool.  There are plenty of places to run.  I live close to Shelby Farms, so I've been exploring those routes.  Most of my biking has been indoors because it's cold and I don't have anyone to ride with yet.

Good luck!

Michele

Welcome to Memphis!!

I live/work downtown and get out on the bike often.

There are now a TON of bike lanes all over the city, including a massive network of interconnected MUPs (Greeline, Shelby Farms, Wolf River).  However these days I tend to stick to the roads north of the city (Watkins up to Shelby Forrest).  The shoulder is wide on Watkins and then the roads around the Forrest are all pretty quiet and it's a nice ride.  That's where most of the organized rides occur in my experience.

I got my Trek from peddlers bike shop who are pretty cool too.  Only Trek and Bontrager stuff really though.

My 1st tri is the Memphis in May Sprint! But I will do a couple of Duathalons in April as a build up (Los Locos, and Race the Trace).

Check out s2fevents.com for local races.

I swim at the UT Health Science Center pool on Madison, Downtown.

Enjoy Memphis!

Check out the Memphis Hightailers website for weekly rides.  I ride with the Mellow Mushroom group on Tuesday nights in Germantown.  The routes are about 22-25 miles and have many groups depending on your pace and we don't leave anyone behind and have a few spots for everyone to catch up.

There is also the Collierville Square ride on Thursday nights from the Collierville town square.  Several different routes and a good group too.

I went on the hightailers Soiree ride last night (tuesdays and thursdays @ sanky's on poplar) and it was pretty awesome.  Fast paced (I would say B level), 29 miles in 1hr 30.  Nice!

Looking at hooking up with one of the group rides this weekend, one of the longer rides. Anyone else going to be out and riding? I'm looking at Vic's ride but would be willing to ride somewhere else. --Chris

I'm definitely planning to ride, just not sure if I can fit my schedule to the group rides (kid's soccer, church, etc....). How far were you wanting to ride?

[p] I'm looking at Vic's ride on the Hightailers weekly ride page, I need to go around 70-80 and run for a bit after the ride. This move has me way off of my IM training so I'm focusing on some quality over quantity workouts.
