Subject: RE: Assault Weapon Ban Would Have Virtually No Impact on Gun MurdersAlso interesting in the "rationale gun control debate" is the fact that the Obama administrations prosecution of violations of gun laws is down 40% from the number under President Bush. (according to a Syracuse University Study) In 2010 ATF forwarded approximately 4,700 cases to DOJ for prosecution for giving false information on a firearms application. Of that number only 44 were actually prosecuted. The DOJ says that they have finite resources and cannot spend the time prosecuting those that simply lie on a firearms application, but rather will spend the resources on prosecuting individuals that actually obtain guns illegally. (Which is funny because federal prosecutions for illegally obtaining a firearm are donw 14%) Additionally this rationale from DOJ is eye raising especially in light of the call for "universal background checks" If the DOJ isn't prosecuting cases of fraud in the current background check system, what will magically happen with a more stringent background check system? These are important numbers because the administration and Democrats are calling for increased restrictions and increased or more complete background requirments in the form of "universal background checks". But again, the facts are that the administration isn't even enforcing the current background check restrictions. So, while the administration calls for stricter laws, and stricter background checks, in the same breath they are not enforcing the current laws. |
