Shelbyville, Kentucky

Head First Performance
25F / -4C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 04m 49s
Overall Rank = 3/41f
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Half a bagel, clif bar and sipped on a GU brew. Also, took 2 salt tablets about 10 min out.
Event warmup:

Not enough. By the time I got organized there were only ten minutes left so ran about 1.5 miles.
Swim
  • 08m 27s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not my finest moment. Swim was last, and my heart rate was still high from the bike. Had to run about 200m of frozen ground to the pool entrance and feet went numb. Got in water and apparently did not adjust goggles properly. They preceded to be an issue throughout the swim. Had to stop two or three times and readjust. With that going on, never really got into a rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Well, the next two races have the swim first, so that will really help. More time in the water during training should help, too. I would really like to become a better swimmer.
Transition 1
  • 00m 27s
Comments:

This was a run-bike transition, and it went well. I had the quickest one of the women, and faster than two of the top 3 guys. Glad I decided to go with clipped-in shoes this time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 33m 1s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.81 mile/hr
Comments:

2nd fastest of ladies.
What would you do differently?:

Should have worn gloves. Definitely need to train more. Also, misjudged finish and took shoes off about half mile too early. Probably cost me 15 seconds.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Bike- swim. Slow transition. Hit transition as the same time as the girl who would finish 2nd OA. That was a bit disheartening because I knew with my lack of swim skills I would finish third.
What would you do differently?:

My fingers were numb so I struggled putting on swim cap and getting undressed. At least I won't have to do this transition until next winter again.
Run
  • 21m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

I am not a 5K runner. I was too conservative, and just starting to feel good when the run ended.
What would you do differently?:

Need speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Quckly went to a hot shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running= speed work. Biking= hills. Swimming= ability. Wearing gloves. Taking bike shoes off too early.

Event comments:

Love the Headfirst Performance races.

Course: 21.8 sounds great but my Garmin shows that the course was closer to 11 miles, which would be closer to 20mph. My lack of bike fitness really came through, as my quads were burning and the smallish hills felt like mountains. Still, I'm happy enough with this ride.

Work on that swim speed and you'll be monster!  Because you're already a Beast!!  You are so fast on the run and bike, whew!!!!!!!!  I'll be anxious to see how you do with the swim first, running on frozen ground with bare feet sounds painful, I BET the water felt great!  Super job, Erin!
