I have done 2 HIM and been training for the full IM in the woodland for about 11 weeks now. I was just wondering if doing the HIM in Galveston 1 month from my big race will be a good training day to see where I am or a bad idea cause its so close to the full? Thanks for everyone's input in advance.

I know of several people doing both events. I think that is why they maintain that one month time difference.

Lots of people use Galveston as a warm up to IMTX, so I'd say its a good idea.

to me it depends....you effectively lose about a week or two of a good build by doing Galveston...on the flipside you get that one day of intensity and the mental strength to see all systems are in check. To me it depends on what your goal is at IMTX? if you are close to KQ or wanting to put up a fast time I would say don't...if you are just going to finish IMTX then I would go ahead and do Galveston from a fitness standpoint....remember you are always taking a risk racing getting injured, wrecking, etc. either way IT can and IS done but at a price in my book.

Kman as it right ;-)  The general rule of thumb is 30 days, but again it does depend.  If you're looking to test fitness and very long brick is a good way (and less expensive) way to do that without the expense  (race, travel, hotel) of a trip to Galveston.

Kona and Las Vegas are right at a month apart, and lots of top flight contenders (both professional and AG) do both races.

Really, the answer to the question depends on your training plan and your goals & expectations for each race. A HIM can involve a few weeks disruption and derail you during a critical time, or it can be built right into your IM plan.

The number of people doing Galveston has jumped way up from when it was the LoneStar race a few years ago. My guess is that IM-TX is a big part of the reason why. It would be interesting to know what the percentage of people doing both races might be. I know there's a lot!

This.  A smartly constructed training plan will let you go into Galveston mostly rested and come out ready to keep plugging along.  I fail to see where it's an issue.
