Pre-race routine:

Was not in race mode, ate very bad pre-race dinner (nachos, beer, ice cream). Felt sick in the morning (no wonder, how stupid can I be?). Ate a bagel with cream cheese, made numerous trips to the bathroom.
Event warmup:

Did a short warm-up swim, almost decided not to do the race. My heart just wasn't in it. Loaned extra pair of goggles to friend when the waves ripped his off.
Swim
  • 36m 54s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

I know I could have done better. I was afraid of going too hard and not having anything left.
What would you do differently?:

Swim like I know I can. Practice open-water navigation.
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

Always have trouble getting arms out of wetsuit, trying to do that and walk to t1. I hate going barefoot, took time to put on socks. Regular cycling shoes with ratchet strap, takes more time to get into.
What would you do differently?:

Run to T1, then mess with wetsuit??? practice this transition more.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 28s
  • 25 miles
  • 17.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Just not fast enough
What would you do differently?:

need to learn to ride faster / harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

this one went well, I thought. Again, the ratchet strap cyclin shoes take a little more time than tri shoes to get off.
What would you do differently?:

I was happy with it, maybe learn to pull running shoes on while standing.
Run
  • 58m 20s
  • 6.4 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

would have liked a little more water on the run. I did better than I thought I would. This was probably the best part of my race. I think it is because I knew that when it was done, it was all done. I could go as hard as I wanted (not very hard in my case) and not worry about burning out.
What would you do differently?:

be more careful when pooring water on head to cool down. When you poor too far back, it goes down the back and straight to your shoes. Wet shoes really suck.
Post race
Warm down:

????????????????????

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike wreck causing shoulder injury 2 months earlier. Just started training again 1 month ago. I had to change my goal from having a decent time to just finishing.

Especially for your heart not being in it -- you did a great job! When taking off your wetsuit on the way to T1, be sure to do one arm at a time. At least I found that helped me to get it off my upper body before reaching T1. One arm, peel down to wrist, put thumb of other hand under the wrist part and take it off that arm and start working on the other. One at a time, and don't rush.
