I bought this book about 6 months ago intending to make some of the rice bars for long rides and other recipes for dinner. I'm just starting to flick through it right now. Just wondering what recipes people have tried from the book that they really recommend.

My wife and I do the Pizza (crust and sauce) and the fried rice recipes almost every week. I have also done the spaghetti sauce w/ red wine and it was excellent.

We're picking up a new rice cooker this week to try some more recipes.

I'm just back from my first ride trying the coconut peanut chocolate chip rice cakes - they tasted yummy but I'm sad to report that the coconut in them made me cough - this is the same issue that I have with Lara Bars . I think I will try the egg , bacon and cashew rice cakes next!
turkey shepherds pie is a winner - definitely going to try the tacos and meatballs in red wine sauce

The sweet potato pancakes are great, though they're better heated up as leftovers than the first time around. It's hard to get them not to be a little wet in the middle, probably because of the water in the sweet potatotes. We also liked the buttermilk pancakes and the buffalo empanadas. Finally, the waffle ride sandwich is kind of nice, though I'm not sure I'd carry a waffle sandwich with cream cheese and jam in my pocket.

I really liked the look of the waffle ride sandwich but share your concerns about the potential mess!

Really like the waffle ride sandwiches here as well. Loaded them up with natural peanut butter, and tried one with strawberry cream cheese.   I've made about 4 batches and have only wound up with enough to go on one ride!

I am wondering how dry they should be though, it seems they are pretty wet in the middle, no matter how long I cook them.

Tried the Allan rice cakes, tasted good, but kinda choked on the rice while on the bike.  I should have used more of the sticky rice, as it didn't hold together as well as I would have liked (used 3 C. cooked, as it was already prepared, instead of the 2 C. dry).

Really like the fact that neither of the above gave any GI issues for me or the girlfriend (50 mile ride).

Made the Lentil soup tonight,  interesting.   Used 2 whole jalapeno's minced, instead of the 1 tablespoon called for,  and unsalted chicken stock.  Pretty good, would be better with chicken, or beef added (which would be nearly like chili).  Will probably try it again.  The girlfriend was pretty skeptical, and is still on the fence, but she said she didn't think it was bad, and would probably eat it again.

X2 on the choking on rice bars whilst riding - I thought it was the coconut though and not the rice which caused it. Which rice bar was it which made you choke?

I make the lentil soup for hubby all the time (using curry). The orange chicken is a huge favorite of ours, too. Watch for orange marmalade that doesn't contain HFCS. I'll make a big batch of the red cabbage/onion/jalapeno and also add garlic. I don't dredge the chicken before cooking it, however. The cabbage is excellent with pork, too. Had it with grilled chops last weekend. The only caveat: if you have leftovers, do not store the chicken/pork with the red cabbage mixture. It'll taste fine, but it turns an unfortunate shade of blue.

I get tired of gu packs and cliff bars killing my stomach sometimes.  Hopefully this helps

I have the feed zone portables book. I haven't tried them all yet, but I took the Blueberry & chocolate rice cake recipe and used blackberries instead. I really liked it.

The apple pie rice cake I think I made a tad too salty, but totally edible. I liked my blackberry&choco way better.

The rice & egg omelet is pretty simple, but it made for a real nice breakfast before my ride.

Phi , I have both books and am experimenting weekly - I am having problems keeping the rice bars as a bar though , which makes them difficult to pack and eat on the road . Any advice? I love the regular bacon, egg, soy sauce bar - so delicious with zero GI distress !

I made 2 different varieties of the rice bars with Calrose rice and they held together great.  That stuff is VERY sticky.  I packed them in 8x10" pan very tightly, let them sit in the fridge over night and then cut and wrapped them in foil the next day.  Worked great!

Has anyone tried preserving the rice cakes yet? How long do you let them sit in the fridge for before using?

The last batch I made dried out in the fridge after about 4 days. today I tried the savoury bread cakes for my ride - very yummy and stay together a lot better than the rice cakes, although the eggy texture may not be to everyone's liking!
