Pre-race routine:

Jogged from my house to the event. Got there early to do packet pick-up for the team, then stood around waiting for everyone to show up.
Event warmup:

My "warm up" was running the Hermes Cleveland 10-miler this morning, then running the two miles from my house to this race's start. After that, as a team we just tried to find a place to set up our stuff and got everyone's kids & family settled. Before we knew it, it was time for the first runner to line up and go!

Comments:

I was the #2 runner for us. I was a little concerned about how my legs might feel heading into this. Between doing the 10-miler this morning and the patellar tendon issues I'd been having the past few weeks, I wasn't even sure that I'd be able to make a decent showing of things. It turns out, that I was going to be pleasantly surprised. The jog to the event from my house showed me that the legs just needed a little warming up after the early race, and when I started my first lap, I got another dose of that, but they woke back up fairly quickly. The course went out past the elephants, up through the new dinosaur exhibit, around and up to the wolves, past the bears and then back down and around past a panther house to the handoff area and finish line.
On lap two, I heard the wolves for the first time, but thought nothing of it because it just sounded TOO perfect, like a recording. It wasn't until I was chatting with some folks before Lap 4 that I realized that those were actually the wolves howling... it was freaking awesome and chilling to hear as I ran by.
The mules were out during a few laps, to which I thought to myself "Nice ass!" every time I passed them. I never got to see the elephants, though :(
By the time I started Lap 5 the sun had set and it was getting dark. The paths weren't well lit in some areas, so in the darker places I was looking more at my feet for where they would be landing than anything. My knee twinged on me once from the patellar tendon issue, and all I did to correct it was to straighten my body up and leaned more at the ankles instead of the waist and every last shred of pain went away (even today when walking up stairs!). It was soooo nice to be able to run hard and not have any worry about the knee. Each lap was a short battle to get the legs loosened up, then stride to the uppermost part at the halfway point, then fly back down to the finish to hand off. I was the last runner for our team, so when I was finishing my 6th lap, I slowed down before the finish line and we all crossed the line together. An incredibly fun event in its inaugural year that I will definitely be doing again next year.

What would you do differently?:

Absolutely nothing, except perhaps bring a change of clothes for afterwards because the temps dropped big time after the sun went down.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with my teammates, took pictures, ate food, laughed our butts off. :-)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think that I/we did just about as well as I/we could have.

Event comments:

Trivium Racing puts on a great show. I highly recommend trying one of their events if you have the chance.
