Pre-race routine:

Up about 3 hrs before the race. Red bull to flush the system. Then a bagel with peanut butter and banana. Could only get half down because my stomach was so twisted from nerves. 2 immodium. Did some stretching, foam rolling, finished packing my bag (and choosing my jacket to wear). Decided to wear the Zensah socks both for warmth and help ward off cramps or calf crabbiness.

Went pee at least 10x before the race. Headed to transition at 6:45, out of transition about 7:40 and over to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Just some jumping jacks and stretching prior to the swim.
Swim
  • 30m 36s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was super cold, but didn't feel as bad as the pre swim maybe because of adrenaline. Used both a neoprene cap and swim booties. Tried really hard to pee in the wetsuit about 3/4 ofnthe way and couldn't. Right calf seemed like it wanted to cramp at the last part of the swim, or grabbed a few times.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to pee in the wetsuit
Transition 1
  • 09m 10s
Comments:

Pulled out of the water by volunteer. Got goggles and cap off and top part of wetsuit off immediately. Ran to top of the ramp to grab my drop shoes. Put on shoes with swim booties on since they were under the bottom of the wetsuit and ran to transition. Transitions was about 0.3 miles away. Had 2 jackets in transition and choose the one that didn't have the endurolytes in so was searching for them. Took some time putting full fingered gloves on too.
What would you do differently?:

Be quicker
Bike

Comments:

Freaked out when I drove the course on Saturday but handled both the very wet conditions and the course difficulty very well. Once I felt comfortable with the rain, I hauled ass on the downhills. Tried wearing glasses, but so wet and cold they were too foggy and wet to see through and this course it too technical to not be able to see perfectly. Stopped at aid station to have someone put the glasses in my bike jacket for me since I had gloves on. Early on before entering the mountain there was a downhill so steep that I was on both brakes 100% and was still flying down the hill ... That was the only point here I was a bit freaked out.
What would you do differently?:

More hill training, longer harder rides! I was fairly happy with my performance
Transition 2
  • 04m 8s
Comments:

Feet were so wet and cold that I could not feel my toes. My hands were soaked as well so had trouble tying my shoes. Started cursing. Took a minute or so to get off wet jacket and gloves and put on dry socks (that would soon be soaked!)
What would you do differently?:

Be quicker
Run
  • 1h 17m 13s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran most of the run. I walked a little bit at aid stations to get liquids in, but just a few seconds. Had a few other walk breaks not because my body was trashed, but from pure exhaustion. Not sure if my nutrition was off. Took gel at about mile 2 and 4-5, mostly water and just a little Gatorade at the aid stations.
What would you do differently?:

More long bricks to get my legs and body ready for this exhaustion. Don't think my HR was sky high either, just long stressful day
Post race
Warm down:

Stop moving and recoverite

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather and the elements, being my first Olympic tri and trying to hit the nutrition

Event comments:

Race was great and organized very well. Volunteers were awesome throughout! I want to do this again!

My nutrition:
Swim: 1 tropical hammer gel 15-20 minutes before swim start with water

Bike: Drank about 90% of 20oz water bottle and 75% of 20 oz perform bottle, took equivalent of 2.25 hammer gels. Gels taken at beginning of bike and sipped every 30 minutes from gel flask

Run: water on the way out of transition. 2 total gels at aid stations 2 and 5, water most of the run with some Gatorade. Had to force the gels on the run, didn't want them.
