Overall Rank = 67/404
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 17/44
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30, didn't sleep well due to dog in neighborhood barking all night. Just glad it wasn't mine who was keeping everyone up. Ate breakfast, packed up the car, and headed up to the race. Feeling good these days getting ready and making sure I have everything. Of course, that will be sure sign to forget something next time.
Event warmup:

None much to speak of. Tried to find some friends I knew in the race, who were racing their first tri. Also found SD Writer, who was racked two spaces down from me. Good to meet another BTer!
  • 23m 24s
  • 1320 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards

Actually was able to follow some feet this time! Navigated well, and got into a pretty good rhythm early. Good swim for me.
What would you do differently?:

Probably need to swim more. Performance this season has improved, but need to keep building on it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s

Need to work on T1. I have a hard time getting suit off. Miss those wetsuit peelers!
What would you do differently?:

Get my suit of easier.
  • 46m 4s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.84 mile/hr

Solid bike for me. I've been riding harder this season, maybe not enough volume, but trying to make it count. With this short of a course, just tried to go hard the whole way. Really wasn't trying to pace exactly, just trying to go a little bit more than comfortably hard. Had a good run today, so must have done alright on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s

Pretty good transition for me. I did remember to run with hat an number belt rather than put them on in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Going to have to figure out the dismount soon.
  • 37m 37s
  • 5 miles
  • 07m 59s  min/mile

Just tried to run as hard as I could without blowing up. Tried to constantly keep pressure on myself to keep pace up. Felt very happy with this run.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw the family, and the family of the friends racing. Was a very fun day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing. This was a fast day for me. Overall, I really had a great time at this race. Felt like I was able to push the entire time, not just trying to get through it. Good feeling for me. Also was nice to give some pointers to some new triathletes, and see some friends racing. Just a really nice race, and a nice day.

Event comments:

Good race. People are friendly, its well organized. Need perhaps more volume on speakers at start. was hard to hear the countdown to the waves starting. Several in wave in front of me missed their starting time.

Great job, kmac! Very solid race all the way through. You didn't seem to have any trouble at all with the swim -- and your bike and run both look terrific. It's inspiring to see your steady improvements and watch you step up to each successive challenge. Nice to meet you, too!

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I struggled on the bike while climbing the hill portions of the course. I do fine on long straight rides but really have a tough time while hill climbing. Any advice or training tips?

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

I’m terrified of biking hills and the triathlon I am registered for has several hills…on AND off road!! I’m willing to do whatever it takes to finish this triathlon. Any guidance?
