Subject: Finish with an Oly?
Ok so I have done 2 x sprint tris and one duathlon so far this year, I would like to move up to Olympic distance at some point and was originally gonna wait until next year. In 6 weeks time there is an Oly which I took part in last year as a team and done the cycle route which is pretty flat all way round.

Am I crazy to try and complete an Oly with such short time to up my training?
My biking is fine, my swimming isn't bad, I've done some swimming in the open water before but only half mile and my running currently needs a few miles added but am generally quite a strong runner.

If I do the Oly then at least I would highlight where I need to focus for next year.

Thanks in advance...

Just a quick tip: if you want some good feedback on questions like this, keep an updated training log. Then the more experienced people on this site can give you realistic answers.

Best of luck to you!

You can get up to that fitness level in 6 weeks but it's your base that will provide the ability to race of finish.  As blbriley stated you really need to keep a log of your activity level to get a good answer.  I would like to know what your weekly swim volume is and what your bike and run mileage is per week.

If you have been training solidly for the past few months an Oly is definitely something you can complete.

Hard to tell without knowing your volumes, but if you know you will be able to do the swim safely I would be signing up if I were in your shoes!

Ok guys thanks for the feedback, and I take onboard about keeping a log online.

Currently I swim 3 times a week covering a total of 5.2 km, this consists of two 1600m sessions and a 2000m session.
Cycling about 3 times a week also covering around 60 miles mixing it up with some hill routes and some flats.
Running 3 times a week at 4 miles at a time but plan to increase this slightly to include at least one 10k per week.

Thanks again

I think you can do it. Your volume is not crazy high, but you still have 6 weeks to race day, which will give you plenty of time to adjust it for an Oly distance.

If I can do it, you can do it. I didnt have the highest volume either but I was able to survive and cross the finish line. It might not be pretty but its doable. I would also echo about swim safety. Make sure you can cover the distance in the swim comfortably before doing the race. You can slack on the bike and run if you get tired but getting tired on the swim can be unsafe.

Do it ! I just did my first Oly on July 7th. Tri for Old Glory in San Marcos. Previously I had done about 10 Sprints. 50-54 age group. I really enjoyed the distance and plan on doing more. I think with your workout's you'll be fine. The hardest part was the Texas heat !

Which Oly are you thinking of ?

The oly is here in bonnie Scotland uk, so the waters will likely be between 10 and 14 degC, last year was 10 deg so I need to prepare for that!

Your volumes are reasonable. With six weeks to go, you've really got about a month to prepare. Three sessions per sport is great. For the swim, you're covering the distance each session, I'm not sure you need do more there. I'd just up the 'long' session so your doing an 8 mile run and a 35-40 mile bike. If you're hitting those numbers, you should be good to go. Now, don't go out and do an 8 mile run if your current longest is 4. Work your way up to it during the month.

I did a similar build up in my first year - you should be good to get through it. Water temps here in Ireland (North East) have increase a good bit in the last 2 weeks so it may be more comfortable than you think.
Make sure to get plenty of practice in OWS's in as similar conditions as the race as possible. The bike you should have no really problems - especially if the course is flat, as someone else said just build your run milage up slowly. Pace yourself and you shopuld be fine.

You should be able to do it. With Oly's, the swim is disproportionately longer than the other legs. I would just try to add another (or longer) swim if possible.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09
