Age Group Rank = 9/36
Pre-race routine:

This was a bit different from the norm as my wife and I are racing together for the first time, and we brought the family + 2. Race morning was chilly and wet, so staying warm was paramount as we left the hotel towards transition.

Event warmup:

Racked the bikes, ran a quick half mile to some vacant Biffy's, took care of business and ran back to transition to meet Missy.
Swim
  • 09m 4s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Terrible swim. This was the first time that I got into the water with my wetsuit and it felt very constricted. My race weight from 2012 was 170 and I checked into Trinona around 178, which seemed to be the biggest variable from the year previous. Outside of a panic, I did struggle to trust my breathing technique and resorted to a side stroke a few times.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing new on race day... Get in the water a few times before the race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Not a bad transition, but not a great one either. All went well from the water to the bike mount line, but I forgot to put a rubber band on my shoe. I struggled gathering speed and getting my feet into the shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Go through my pre-race procedure and not miss an important thing like the rubber band.
Bike
  • 33m 18s
  • 11 miles
  • 19.67 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I'd be faster than 19.8mph, but I guess 9 out of 36 shows it was a little tougher course than your typical rollers. I really would have liked getting up to speed sooner and I know I could have pushed a touch harder on the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Pushing harder on the hills, although the hills are where I caught the most people. I got passed quite a bit on the flats so this tells me that I have some opportunities to improve effeciency here.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

This was the best that I came into the bike off line. Smooth jump off the bike and a quick run to transition.
Run
  • 23m 26s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile and a half hurt, but I was able to push through it and got comfortable enough to open up my gate and get some speed.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks so I can get that speed early in the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my finisher medal and took a walk around to wait for Missy to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lots going on outside of triathlon training.

Event comments:

Love this race. I'd love to get back there soon!

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Should I have time goals for the first sprint? Should I just finish the race at a reasonable pace? I'm not sure how to approach this.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.
