New user 13 | Subject: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans I an having shoulder surgery in early September and I want to do syracuse HIM in June and LPIM in July. Have completed several HIMs but this would be my first full. I am an ok athlete, but certainly not like many others. I usually finishing around 60%-70% of the total group. Looking for suggestions to keep training after my surgery. Doctor says I am not supposed to do any 'fun' stuff for 2-3months. |

Veteran 720 Aurora, Illinois | Subject: RE: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans What does he mean by any fun stuff??? Keep your head up, you'll have plenty of time! I just had back surgery, and felt my 2014 season was shot as well. But now, 2 weeks post-surgery I'm starting to feel better and getting my mojo back to get into training. So time will fly by! A full I'm in July might be tough, being that it's usually a good bet to have at least 9 months to train for it. If you start in Dec, you'll have 8 so doable, but might hurt a bit. If your able to get back into training a few weeks after surgery, I would suggest riding the trainer as much as you can with no hands. It's the best bet to get your fitness back, while not aggravating your shoulder. As long as the doc clears that, you should be well on your way! Good luck! |

New user 13 | Subject: RE: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans I have to get more detail about what I can a d can't do. I expect swimming is out, and likely running and biking. Not sure for how long yet. I plan to continue going to the gym, as I can use the recumbent at a minimum. Does anyone else have experience coming back from shoulder surgery? |

Extreme Veteran 668 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans What kind of shoulder surgery? I had RC repair Nov 30th 2012 and it took months to get to where I could do much of anything. |

57 | Subject: RE: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans I had shoulder surgery the day after Xmas 2012. My PT didn't clear me to bike or run until April and I couldn't swim until June. Hopefully you heal faster than I did! |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans One thing I learned from surgery is do not make too many if any before the surgery. I had surgery and some talk about couple days being back to normal and for me it more took a couple of weeks. Trouble is you never know how your recovery will go and how much time it will take to get back to normal. Plus you never want to rush healing. |

Master 1324 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans A lot depends on what kind of surgery it is. And somewhat, how old you are. If you're doing halves and full IMs, then fitness going into surgery isnt an issue. I had surgery to repair a partially torn labrum (bicep tendon). In a sling for a month. I was cleared to swim after about 3 months, but it was very uncomfortable. More like 6 months to be realistic. It was a full year before I felt "normal". As for biking and runing, I was on a spin bike while still in the sling. Running and outdoor riding took awhile longer. Getting into aero position on the bike wasnt fun for several months. I was in my late 30s when I had it. Rotator cuff repairs, from what I understand, take longer than what I dealt with. Something like clearing out the AC joint would likely be a quicker recovery. Younger people heal faster than older people. Not sure if this helps, but it was my experience. Good luck. |

New user 13 | Subject: RE: Shoulder surgery and 2014 Tri plans Thanks for all the great comments. I have surgery scheduled for 9-11, but just made a new appointment with the surgeon for Monday. I have about 80% range of motion back and can just about get into my aero bars. Some pain at the end of motion, but not too bad. Have even slept several nights without advil. I am hoping that in the 5 months since I injured it, it has healed enough to cancel surgical repair. |
