Total Time = 2h 37m 55s
Overall Rank = 60/438
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 7/35
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:20 and got to the race. Had a few banana's, a Naked Juice and a cliff bar. And of course, used the bathroom.
Event warmup:

Did some stretching and chatting and had a Powerbar Gel about 20 minutes before my wave took off.
Swim
  • 36m 26s
  • 1450 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

This swim had to have been quite a bit longer than last year. Took 5 minutes longer but still placed about the same in my age group. Siting was difficult on the back side of the triangle due to the rising sun. My goggles leaked a few times and I had to tread water to fix them 3 times. That was frustrating. I think I just didn't get them on well enough before the start, and didn't fix them right the first two times. After fixing them the 3rd time they were good to go for the last half of the swim. Felt pretty tired near the end. I was just getting over a cold and I think that had an effect on my performance for all 3 disciplines.
What would you do differently?:

Secure goggles better before the start.
Transition 1
  • 05m 52s
Comments:

Took my wetsuit off in the grass before I went into T1 (time still counted towards T1 time). The dumbest thing I did, and I've never done this before, was put my left shoe on my right pedal and my right shoe on my left pedal. That cost me some time after I left T1.
What would you do differently?:

Um, put the shoe on the correct pedal
Bike
  • 1h 13m 22s
  • 26 miles
  • 21.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs were sore for most of this ride for some reason. Pushed the pace pretty good though. Took 2 Powerbar Gels, 1 salt tab and 2 bottles of Ironman Perform. Minus the mishap with the shoes and pedal, my pace was 21.8. I was aiming for 22. So even though 21.3 isn't what I wanted, in reality I was closer to my goal. There were some pretty strong winds out there but they didn't affect me as much as I thought they would.
What would you do differently?:

Stretching my legs a little more before the race might have helped.
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Pretty standard here. I always feel like putting my socks and shoes on and tying them takes forever.
What would you do differently?:

Should invest in triathlon shoes where I don't need socks and don't have to tie them.
Run
  • 43m 31s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

I was really disappointed in my run. Wanted to go at least 3:30 faster. But I think with fighting the cold I just didn't have the energy in me. As soon as I took off running I knew it wasn't going to be as fast as I wanted. I am still relatively happy with my placing though, but know I have the ability to drop a much faster run split. Next year.
Post race
Warm down:

Didn't do much after the race. Stuck around for a little bit and got a few gatorades, then took off back to the hotel to check out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fighting a lingering cold really slowed me down I feel.

Event comments:

This is a really good race put on at a really good venue. Parking is a ways away but they do provide a shuttle, which I've never taken advantage of. It's well put on, well organized and has a more professional feel to it than your normal local sprint triathlon.

What kind of time difference would one expect in changing from a road bike with aerobars to a tri bike with aerobars over a HIM distance if using the same wheelset?

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

I am totally out of shape. I haven't worked out in over 2 years. I want to get back into it. I am facing several challenges including time constraints and being over weight.

Should I have time goals for the first sprint? Should I just finish the race at a reasonable pace? I'm not sure how to approach this.

It’s a challenge to push yourself a little harder and a little further. Be proud of every workout that is accomplished and every step-even the baby ones-that you take on this course to the finishline.

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
