Just got back from a run, what is going on? I planned on running 4.5 miles at a moderate pace
(8:30-9:00) and it killed me. Usually this is not bad and my average hr is 150-153, but not today. My pace was 9:30 to 9:45 and my hr was 160-165. Question is, it is nasty hot and humid outside, heat index of 97. Does the heat and humidity really affect one's hr or I am just being a wuss?

ABSOLUTLY......your body is laboring in the heat and humidity, and it can be dangerous. Be very careful and modify as you need to in order to take into account the extra work your body is taking on.

You guessed the problem. Heat and humidity in combination are REALLY hard on athletes. Heat is bad enough but humidity with it is worse. Don't feel bad about slowing down on days like that. In fact, if your usual pace is 8:30-9:00, you should probably slow down to 9:45-10:00 and not worry about that being too slow. And drink, drink, drink (water that is!) when the weather is hot and humid. Good luck.

yes - especially if you are dehydrated. Even for a 4.5 mile run you should take water with you.

overtraining will also affect your performance - how hard have you been training? have you been resting enough between your harder workouts?

On runs longer than 3miles I wear my fuel belt and take drinks every 15 mins. I have been mixing up a bottle of cytomax and drinking this during my runs and bike.

I take one day off a week, usually Sunday. I train hard, but am pretty good at listening to my body and know when I need to take an easy day.

I just want to take a moment and thank everyone and thank the people that run this site. It is such a blessing to have this site as a resource and motivator and to consult with a group of people that are knowledgeable and have a passion towards this sport.

Thank You.
