Overall Rank = /

Age Group Rank = 9/15
Pre-race routine:

The day before I picked up my packet and got body-marked. I went for a 12 mile bike ride on some of the course. I stayed at the Riptide Inn nearby and got my gear laid out the night. On race day, I woke up at 6am. I had an apple and fruit bar. I also had a diet coke for a little wake-me-up. I got to transition to setup my bike and learned that the alternate swim course was going to be used because of a storm the previous evening and expected storms that morning. No biggie. I had looked at the map the night before.
Event warmup:

I stretched and tried to get loose, even while the anticipation built up. Not getting into the water beforehand and going for a brief swim was going to be a problem for me later.
Swim
  • 1h 04m 37s
  • 2112 yards
  • 03m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

I panicked in the first couple hundred meters. I wanted to give up. I did some backstroke to get my breath back. When the course took a turn back towards the beginning, I enjoyed the current back to shore and regrouped. The second lap I did swim with a front crawl stroke and regained some of my confidence.
Transition 1
  • 05m 56s
Comments:

It was 1/4 mile from the beach to the transition. I was discouraged from my swim, but the people cheering me on helped. I took off my swim cap, vainly thinking people wouldn't notice that I was in the half distance wave.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get better at taking off my wetsuit.
Bike
  • 3h 02m 32s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.41 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike went well. I still am weak on hills, not news to me.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

I thought I moved through transition pretty smoothly. I did take too much time I think to load my pockets with my nutrition for the run, which I ended not using.
Run
  • 2h 22m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

I kept moving. I kept running. My stride though was not very strong. I need to work on getting a leg kick. I think that will improve if I do more speed work in training.
What would you do differently?:

Train for more speed. I can run the distance. I need to run the speed I want.
Post race
Warm down:

After the finish line there was a great kid from the high school cross-country team that helped me stretch. I went back to the Riptide Inn and I had an adult beverage with friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I trained this summer in order to survive this race. I want to get better at training with a plan.

Event comments:

This race was my second half. I trained very little this summer and I had a simple goal--I will survive. I did survive. I did finish. The bike course was outstanding. The run course was boring, but thankfully flat. I enjoyed the awards dinner catered by Boston Market. The band was fun. The $7500 in raffle prizes were exciting. The volunteers on the course were where I needed them. Thanks to the East Tawas and all the people of that area for supporting this race.

When we get ready to train or race, we have a pretty fixed set of thoughts. We are unaware of how they affect our racing.

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.
