Set Up Events

Overcast
Total Time = 2h 32m 29s
Overall Rank = 138/509
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/33
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and ate bowl of cereal. Also ate English muffin with peanut butter during hour drive to race site. Ate 2 Lara bars while setting up transition.
Event warmup:

Spent 10 minutes in Lake Anna swimming to get heart rate up.
Swim
  • 26m 20s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

I tried to start fast with my wave as I am trying to be less tentative with the swim. After 200-300 meters, however, I started to find difficulty finding clean water. The rest of the swim felt like a struggle, but my time is great.
What would you do differently?:

Continue working on getting more comfortable with the swim. Stop thinking about it so much and rely on my training.
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

It took me too long to get my socks on as my feet were wet and sandy.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get bike shoes and do this without socks.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 34s
  • 26.09 miles
  • 20.72 mile/hr
Comments:

The second half of the course was more challenging than I expected with quite a few hills. None were overly steep, but they kept coming. I really worked to push them hard.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get clipless pedals and keep working on bike training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

I turned the wrong way in T1 and ran about 5 steps in the wrong direction before realizing where the run start was.
What would you do differently?:

Concentrate more on where the run start is located.
Run
  • 46m 18s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 38s  min/km
Comments:

The uphill out of T2 was slow on each lap. I felt great by middle of first lap and started to push the pace for the second half of each lap. I met up with Adam from RTC early on the second lap. We chatted for a minute. I was feeling good and pushed ahead.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the uphills at the start of each lap.
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza, gatorade, water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to get more comfortable with the swim and continue to push the pace on all 3.

Event comments:

I had an absolute blast at this race. I felt really good. I am sad that the season is over as I want to keep racing. I will try a half next summer.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
