Subject: Greenville County Transportation Sales Tax Referendum anyone not busy tomorrow afternoon in the Greenville area might want to go show some cycling support: Action alert for all Greenville County Residents: Greenville County Council is currently considering a local option sales tax referendum that if approved would generate revenues to fund local transportation improvement projects.
Two options are under consideration: “Roads Only” and “Roads Plus.” Roads Only would direct 100% of the sales tax proceeds to roads, while Roads Plus would direct most of the proceeds to roads, but a portion would be used to improve the public bus system, build walking and biking trails, and construct sidewalks where needed.
Upstate Forever partnered with the Greenville Transit Authority to gather objective data onto gather objective data on opinions of Greenville County voters on whether they should be given the opportunity to vote on a possible transportation sales tax and on what allocation of revenues to various transportation projects they would most likely support. Despite these results (which we have sent to Council), a resolution in favor of Roads Only has been drafted and is moving forward. In fact, the matter will be discussed by Council at a Committee of the Whole meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, October 1) at 4:30 p.m. in Conference Room D at Greenville County Square. Please attend and express your support for the Roads Plus option, and please contact your County Council member before Tuesday. Tell him or her that you support a wide variety of solutions to address our transportation issues, that they should not ignore the results of the public poll, and that you support the Roads Plus option!
