Pre-race routine:

We went down the night before and stayed at a hotel on the seawall with Kylie's fam and Koby. Kylie was also racing doing the sprint relay with her sisters (Lyndli swimming, Megan running). Had a nice pre race dinner with everyone at a great resteraunt that I can't remember the name of but had some awesome shrimp!

Weather was horrible windy with a cold front (first of the year) blowing in on Friday before the race. Swim was cancelled due to the wind and the chop.
Event warmup:

With the swim cancelled, they had us wait by our bikes in transition and someone started with #1 and went down the line sending people off every 5 seconds. Being #550 this was a long wait standing in transition with my butt shivering because I was cold!

Comments:

The last time I did this race course (Lonestar 1/4 IM 2008) it was also crazy windy but the wind was from the opposite direction. We headed out of transition and made our way to the road (can't remember name) parallel to the seawall where we headed south down the island and had a beautiful tail wind and we were flying. There were some strong cross winds at times and I was rethinking the 100mm wheel choice but oh well, too late now. Really enjoyed the tail wind knowing what was to come. After we made the turn around headed back into the headwind it was rough. Keep an easy cadence and kept the legs feeling loose. Never pushed too hard into the wind. Got passed by quite a few but did some passing myself. Drank plenty of water and some Accelerade and also had a chocolate honey stinger waffle and a salted carmel gu.
What would you do differently?:

Not have a cold front with crazy north wind blow in 2 days before the race?
Transition 2
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

Transition went smooth. Took a long time because I stopped in the porta pot to pee.
What would you do differently?:

Not drink so much water standing in transition before the race?
Run

Comments:

This course is about as confusing as it gets if you look at it on a map but as long as you just follow the masses it is not a big deal. Started off feeling good, legs a bit heavy but that cleared up in less than a mile and my first mile was 9:45. I did my usual 9:1 run:walk with some consideration for aid stations. Sometimes I would cut my walk short and make up for it at the next aid station. Overall this run felt great. My pace slowed a little each mile but I had a great time and was really happy with my time given how little I trained!
What would you do differently?:

train.
Post race
Warm down:

Found the fam, ate some pizza, hung out till it was time to go shower and check out of the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Severe lack of training!

Event comments:

I like this race and can't blame them for the weather. I do wish that they had made a decision earlier about cancelling the swim. It was pretty obvious on Saturday that they were going to have to but didn't make the decision (publicly) until right before the start of the race. I also wish there had been a bottle hand up on the bike course. I had space to carry enough but it would have been nice to have had less weight on the bike and been able to get fluids mid ride. I would absolutely do this race again though.
