If you had to recommend 3 nutrition changes for someone, what would they be? Yep - Just 3... which 3 changes do you think get you the most improvement.

#1 Eat REAL food, as little processed as possible
#2 Don't be scared of vegetables

Those really were the "only" changes we made in our eating habits and my husband who is paralyzed ( I point this out only because it is harder to lose weight when many muscles no longer work and had actually been told by dr's to just not let him gain anymore as he would be unable to lose weight ) Changing these 2 things for him :lost 35 lbs, feels better and has more energy. I did not lose weight but do have more energy and have improved my race times since making the changes.

I agree start eating unprocessed foods, eat often in smaller amounts and finally use spices and experiment

1.  shop on the outside of the grocery store

2.  drink more water, less of everything else

3.  eat before you are hungry, stop before you are full

Great thread!
For me it would depend on the person's background and goals. If the goal is to lose a bunch of weight, I'd recommend to cut back or eliminating sugar/carbs. If the goal is to eliminate gut discomfort, I'd recommend cutting out wheat first, then all gluten. If the goal is simply to be "healthier" without other outlying goals, I'd suggest eating more unprocessed, whole foods without artificial ANYTHING.

For someone eating a generic American diet, this is what I would recommend:

1. Eat more vegetables.
2. Eat less stuff that comes in a package.
3. If the letters "x" and "z" appear in the ingredients more than twice, find something else to eat.

As Lisa said, depends on their own goals, but the advice I give most frequently:

1. Cut back on Carbs.
2. Don't be afraid of dietary fat - even the saturated stuff
3. Cut back on carbs even more.

1.  Log everything you eat.  Make yourself accountable for everything you put in your mouth.

2.  Limit processed foods.

3.  Eliminate or eat less red meat.  Learn to like fish, chicken & turkey.

THIS!!!!!!!! worked great for me down 50lbs. Any time I have strayed and gone up a little, NSNG works every time. Feel so much better, energetic when I stay on the path.

1) Try to eat food as close to its natural state as possible;
2) Limit animal proteins as much as you comfortably can;
3) Increase your fruit and vegetable intake as much as you can - volume and variety

I decided I should eat as little cr@p as possible and started looking around at what to do, you know, that google thing, it might catch on. I found "Vegan before 6" by Mark Bittman and read it. It made sense, it was flexible, and it fit what I was trying to do. In a little over 2 months I dropped almost 10 pounds and my blood pressure is way down.

Love this Thread! Here are my 3 since these principles helped me lose a ton of weight and keep it off

1.) Drink water only-Say goodbye to soda and beers (have them occasionally). If you must drink alcohol, stick with a clear spirit like vodka and have it with tonic water or on the rocks

2.) Do not eat anything you cannot identify the parts too/understand the ingredients- This means eating whole foods and staying away from processed foods that come in cans, boxes, bags, etc. If you can't read the ingredients or tell what they are, why put it in your body? Think perimiter of the grocery store

3.) Have a colorful plate 5x a day- try to eat a lean protein, something green, something brown, something else colorful with everymeal.

1. Get your significant other on board or better yet in charge of your nutritional plan.
2. Limit your spending at the grocery to allow for just the necessities. Use the small cart or hand held basket at the grocery store.
3. Love thy veggies, big skillet full. I usually buy cases of frozen from the wholesale place to assure ample supply.

Like all the other suggestions. Good post

1) Join a local produce CSA (community supported agriculture). One season with THAT much good produce coming into the house and you will be forced to change your eating habits to veggie-heavy or be over-run!

2) Don't eat things that contain any ingredients that your great-grandparents wouldn't recognize as food. Limit those ingredients to 5 unless it is something you made yourself.

3) Cut out all added sugar in all its forms.

Haha I like this. You sure can avoid a lot of bad eats by avoiding the isles. A vast majority of the healthy food really is on the perimeter.

I'll just reiterate what others have said for reinforcement:

1. Drink water rather than soda, juice, etc. More water!

2. Avoid processed foods - the shorter the ingredient list the better!

3. Just because it is labeled as "natural" or "sports" does not make it healthy. Limit your sports drinks (sugar water) and sports bars (cookies) to only when your body actually needs them.

Yesterday I ran 10 miles. At mile 7 it started feeling sore. At mile 9.5 I got a shooting pain and walked the last 1/2 mile. I have a half Ironman to do in a week and a half. What are my chances?
