Subject: Dr Seuss books translated?

As I close the story "Sleep Book" by Dr Seuss (for the 24th consecutive time this month-my son loves this book). I wonder how Dr Seuss books are translated into other languages. Some of them are more story driven which could be more easily translated, but some rely heavily on alliteration, rhyming and iambic pentameter. Will any of our international members chime in?

For example, here is an excerpt from "Fox in Socks":

Luke Luck likes lakes.

Luke's duck likes lakes.

Luke Luck licks lakes.

Like's duck licks lakes.

Duck takes licks in lakes Luke Luck likes.

Luke Luck takes licks in lakes duck likes.

Hmm,

You wonder how's the translations done,

You wonder, "Am I the only one".

Red Fish, Blue Fish, Rouge Fish, Bleu Fish,

There are things that just can't be Fun!

In French I think it is closer to Poisson Un Poisson Duex Poisson Rouge Poisson Blue which actually rhymes.  Un Pez, Dos Peces, Pez Rojo, Pez Azul not so much.

They do translate them....and it's not always pretty. I teach little kids in Spanish and English and have looked at the Dr. Seuss Spanish translations and they aren't nearly as fun as they are in English. On the other hand, there is lots of Spanish stuff that isn't nearly as much fun in English as it is in Spanish.

They do translate them, and they just "aren't the same."   They tell the same story, but they're not as "fun."

It works the same in the other direction, as well.   In chinese, they have tongue-twisters, and I've learned a couple:

Si shi si.

Shi shi shi.

Shisi shi shisi

Sishi shi sishi.

In english:  4 is 4. 10 is 10. 14 is 14.  40 is 40.   easy.

Another one:

chi pu tao, bu tu pu tao pianr.  Bu chi pu tao, bu tu pu tao piar.

In English:  "Eat the grapes, don't spit the grape seed.  Don't eat the grapes, don't spit the grape seeds.

“Too bad there’s not anything like this for triathletes.” There are a million books and articles on how to train. One of the toughest parts of triathlon training is how to fit them into everyday life.
