This is funny to me. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The race management companies come and go, but the crazy Jekyll triathlon goes on. 20 years ago my wife worked for the Jekyll Island Authority
(JIA
) and was the race director of the 'Bud Light' triathlon
(Only time I got to be race number "1"
).
Jekyll is a great venue for a triathlon, but for a variety of reasons
(mostly minor-mismanagement
) they have never hit the sweet spot and become a destination event. Yet, there WILL be a triathlon every year, because there always has been, because it draws visitors and sells hotel rooms and house rentals, etc. The JIA will keep it going, but will mess with it just enough to mess it up and keep it from ever becoming a major event.
Nonetheless, I recommend everyone go and do it at least once, or even once every 5 years. It's a nice quiet weekend at the beach, and there are many interesting 'things to do' - sea turtles, historic homes, shops, beach, golf, boating, wildlife, bike trails, restaurants, mini-golf, etc. But it's not Disney, nor Wilmington, nor Chattanooga, nor Kona, and never will be.
