The Jekyll Island Turtle Crawl race in May is no longer on the Georgia Multi-sports calendar. I contacted them about it and they said that they are not producing that race this year. I found a Jekyll Island blog site that still lists the race as May 17th, but no further info about who is putting it on or how to sign up. Does anyone have any more information about this race? I hope someone has picked it up because it is one of my favorite destinations.

I don't have an answer to your question but I'm sad to see it not on the schedule.  Last year they moved an early season race to Labor Day weekend and they lost a lot of participants because of that.  I know a lot of folks that always looked forward to starting the season with this race and now it's gone

Hopefully it's not completely gone. A couple of years ago when I did Jeckyll, it was put on by DRC Sports.

It's not on the DRC schedule for 2014. I had already checked them out, as one of the Jax series races will most likely be my substitute if there is no Jekyll race. I have sent an email to Jekyll Island Guest Information so if or when I hear back I will let everyone know.

Tony the RD is a great guy and I am sure he will put on a great event. We are sending some athletes down.

OK, thanks for the update. I was still unable to find any info. Last night I checked the Jekyll Island website and it said the race was on for May 17th, but when I hit the register link (I assume for Active) it didn't work, so I was still unclear if the race was a go or not.

Glad to see it is going to happen!

This is funny to me. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The race management companies come and go, but the crazy Jekyll triathlon goes on. 20 years ago my wife worked for the Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) and was the race director of the 'Bud Light' triathlon (Only time I got to be race number "1").

Jekyll is a great venue for a triathlon, but for a variety of reasons (mostly minor-mismanagement) they have never hit the sweet spot and become a destination event. Yet, there WILL be a triathlon every year, because there always has been, because it draws visitors and sells hotel rooms and house rentals, etc. The JIA will keep it going, but will mess with it just enough to mess it up and keep it from ever becoming a major event.

Nonetheless, I recommend everyone go and do it at least once, or even once every 5 years. It's a nice quiet weekend at the beach, and there are many interesting 'things to do' - sea turtles, historic homes, shops, beach, golf, boating, wildlife, bike trails, restaurants, mini-golf, etc. But it's not Disney, nor Wilmington, nor Chattanooga, nor Kona, and never will be.

I'm not sure what is going on with the JIA and the production companies, but this is at least the 3rd company in 3 years to put on the May Jekyll Island race. It may go back further than that, but 2012 is when I got back into following the participating in the sport. But you are right the history of tri on Jekyll goes way back. I can remember in 1998 going to Jekyll to watch my first triathlon. I was thinking of getting into the sport and wanted to see what it was all about in person, so we went down and watched the race. I have no idea who produced it back then. After that I did a few races in Florida and messed around for a year or two before dropping the sport and finding it again in 2012.

The Jekyll Island Turtle Crawl was my first ever triathlon, and I have done it every year since. That first year for me was 2011 and it was managed by DRC Sports. In 2012 it was managed by Setup Events (first year in Georgia) and in 2013 it was managed by Georgia Multisports. So, including this year, that is 4 diferent organizers in 4 years. So far, regardless of the organizer it has been a great event. I've had no complaints with the race management any of those years and unless they really botch it up this year, this will continue to be a must do event for me. It is a great day and weekend for families. The Turtle Center always has tents setup with activities for the kids and who doesn't enjoy a weekend at the beach! They also release one or more turtles that afternoon, which is cool to see for the kids as well as adults. You also have a choice of sprint or olympic distance, with the bike leg being just a bit longer than "standard", which is also a plus (to me). The bike and run are quite scenic, and I prefer an ocean swim to swimming in a pond or borrow pit.
