St.Kilda (Melbourne), Victoria
AU
Super Sprint
23C / 73F
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 34m 15s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 74/121
Pre-race routine:

- Pre-race nutrition has been working well. I will stick with my current approach for the HIM.
Event warmup:

- Rode to the event ~10km
- Warm up swim
- Stayed in the water (to keep warm) until the event started.
Swim
  • 30m 10s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 01s / 100 meters
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It went as well as it could go. I generally swim a consistent 2:30m per 100m but in the rtace it was 2:01m. Very happy with that (given I do essenitally no swim training)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 1h 12m 30s
  • 40 kms
  • 33.10 km/hr
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have pushed just a little harder on the bike. Maybe gained 1km/h average.

Pacing is still something I am learning in races, particularly the shorter rides. I am better at it during training but my rides are also mucn longer than 40km.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Got a big chunk of bark stuck on my sock. I had to take the shoe off, remove the bark, and put it back again. Cost a couple of seconds.

This happened because I wore socks. I took my feet out of my bike shoes before dismounting so I was running through T2 in my socks only. They picked up the bark.
What would you do differently?:

I'd like to go sockless but I'm prone to blisters. Still trying to get rid of the one I got in November during race 1 (which was only a sprint distance).
Run
  • 47m 35s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 46s  min/km
Comments:

Very happy with the time. I think it was my PR for a 10km TT.

I think I've set my expectations too low.

What would you do differently?:

I could probably have gone a little faster. I did a 4:45 per km pace but I think I could have managed a 4:35 or so.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade
Rode home ~10km

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of pacing experience

Lack of a taper. I was treating the race as part of my overallt raining for the HIM. Given the HIM is in three weeks I chose not to propoerly taper for the Olympic (I took two full days off before the race, but trained hard right up to that point).

Event comments:

During the swim the water got so shallow for a few minutes that you had no choice but to stand up and walk/run that section! Very strange, and you couldn't tell from the beach so it was not expected in the middle of a swim.

Not a great bike leg. Three lap course with a silly little offshoot that was just plain dangerous. A crashed happened right behind me when someone behind slowed too fast into the turnaround, and the guy behind him ran into the back of him.

The run was fine. Along the coast for much of it.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

The race didn't really wear me out but it felt like my body was bonking. Do I really need Gatorade or some other sports drink after a race?

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

So someone convinced you to get off the couch and truck-it to the finish line. Now what? Here's a look at the process from admiring others to inspiring others.

The toll of fate strikes as those with orange swim caps are beckoned to begin the journey. Ahhh, nothing like the feel of ice cold water seeping in your wetsuit to wake you up. GO!

The 112/4 Race Rehearsal Brick. If done correctly, the RR is usually no more stressful than a regular training ride, and that is probably the point.

A 26 week, 6 race series plan for faster performance. A SILVER/GOLD member plan.
