Has anyone done this race before? Thoughts?

Thinking the water might be pretty chilly still, but haven't raced a tri in 2 years so getting kind of antsy and ready to get back to it!

Expecting water to be very cold this year with the way weather has been going. I'm partially wondering if they'll be able to have the swim if USAT does have a 51F cut-off if I saw that correctly before? I only did it in 2012, the hot year with not much of a winter to warm up from (running in shorts in February).

I'm bringing a pair of shoes to get through T1. It's been rather gravely in the past and they allow this. My feet just do not handle rough surfaces well at all and it was horrible for me last time. A lot of people do set out shoes along the way for this.

The first half of the bike is the same. Good hill *right* after the mount line. And then lots of up and down out to Stagecoach. The area really shows who can pace over varying terrain and who's been hitting a variety of hard efforts. Previously it turned off of Stagecoach after just a bit, but this year it goes all the way to Galena. I mapped it on RideWithGPS and the profile still looks fairly similar. About a mile climb and good descent after. I'm guessing the descent may not be quite as fast as Stagecoach isn't as much of a backroad as the the other. But do know I hit 47 while sitting upright, so relatively speaking there.

The run will have a big hill rather quick out of T2, and then the rest is much flatter until coming back down. Though it still may not be that near "pancake" in this area.

I don't know the area well enough to say how easy the 2 transitions will go. A bit cumbersome in 2012, but I don't how they could have fixed it. Race morning was easy though, especially with the later start time. Heard last year was gawd awful, but they had T2 and the finish separate, plus a lot of restrictions on how to move around. This year they should be closer together. Still going to be a pretty full day due to logistics needed, but thinking the course should be fun.

Getting nervous! First mutlisport race since 2011!

Racing the Du. Tried on the skin suit last night, much tighter! Must have shrunk in the wash

Wish Tri did participant lists like bike racing, this is when I start stalking my competition

Arman has been commenting on their FB page. Though it's been on the swim which would be something new for him. Water temp was listed as 62, but wondering how well that will hold over the next few days as the temps are supposed to drop back down.

Odds on this becoming all duathlon this year? Not looking good for the swim with the weather since Tuesday.

Yeah it's been a bit cold and I think they were on the borderline on water temps!

I decided not to do it this weekend... Been battling the flu for 2 weeks and not much ride time and 0 running in the last few weeks. So, best bet was to pass and save it for the next one.

Good luck to everyone racing!

I'm bailing on the race too. They're being all screwy with the swim cut-offs and logistics. It was hard enough to plan for this one as it was and I'm not really up for a duathlon.

It was a great day of racing. Aside from my poor fitness I brought three right shoes. Did the first run leg in two right shoes!

We had a big head / cross wind on the bike which helped me. Just missed the podium and 13th in the du. Run fitness just isn't there anymore.

Friend of mine did it. He won the 60-65 ag. He said the water was cold but he made sure to get in before the start and get used to it. I asked him what the water temp was and he thought probably 60ish. He said the race dir/people were being very mum about it. Someday I'll do this race. He said a lot of people dropped out of the race though it looked like.

Did the Galena Triathlon for first time Saturday.

Water was very cold, I was expecting to be colder during the ride. Sun came out and there was little wind.

I handled the hills better than I expected. Now I know how extreme they are and can adjust my training.
There is nothing really comparable around Schaumburg though.

I hit 42 MPH 2x. Never went that fast on my bike before, nor have I done extensive climbing at 8 mph in the "granny gear" lol.

The first half mile of the run was too steep for me, had to run/walk. I'll work on it for next year.

I hope they keep the course the same, so I can compare apples to apples next year. It seemed very organized: shuttles, parking, registration, etc...
It was what I expected.

Many people I talked to said it was longer than advertised. Multiple GPS said it was 17.5 for bike and 4.4 or 4.5 for run.

Whatever .... I could never have completed a course like that a year ago.

I'm familiar with how some of the fastest people should go and their times did look rather slow. So yeah, would guess it was a little longer than advertised. I don't know why they don't state what it is. At least for the bike. For the run, I'm not sure why they keep making it so long for a sprint.

How were things after the race? And I mean being able to get your stuff and get out of there. I saw they were good about t2 and before the race the day of went well before, but took forever to get the gear from T1 over there. I have no idea why that took several hours. And i think it may have been a couple after I had finished. A lesser concern is how ridiculously late they'll have awards for some examples. Once out on the course it is a fun area. It's not an easy area to run a race in, but they always seem to have some real head scratching decisions that add to it. That and some of their communication tends to be less than stellar. If they could fix that I would be much more inclined to race their again. As it is, this is a lot of effort just to get in an earlier season sprint.

They said they can't clear out T1 until all the bikes had left T1.

I was done with race around 11am, got my gear about 12:45pm.

Was on the way home at 1:30pm roughly.

But whenever I asked someone when bus was coming over. They said 2-3 hrs.
Or some ridiculous amount of time.
