Total Time = 3h 15m 58s
Overall Rank = 83/119
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 13/16
Pre-race routine:

Coffee, water, relax
Event warmup:

Run and Swim a little. Prepare the mind and body.
Swim
  • 32m 51s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

I thought the swim for me was good. I'm not the strongest swimmer and I found a lot of open water. I ran into the sprit competitors because of the delayed start, and cost me some time navigating around them with about 200m to go.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder. I was relaxed and confident, just unsure of how hard to push. It was my first OLY and longest swim in competiton.
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

Trasition was great. I forgot my Cliff shots.
What would you do differently?:

Tape nutrition to the bike so I don't have to remember.
Bike
  • 1h 25m 19s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.48 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I did better on the bike than my results showed. I train with relatively no hills so the bridge was an eye opener. I never felt exhausted, but needed a shot on the second lap. Drank both water bottles but could have used a gel.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

I drank a lot of water after racking the bike. I was a little dehydrated and my back was sore. Ate a gel shot, not sure if that hurt or helped me. I guess it didn't matter, I really was hurting after this point. I was in good spirits until I started to leave T2.

Run
  • 1h 13m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Terrible. My back was killing. Everytime I tried to push, pain. I stopped a couple times at the water stations to stretch my back, but it was too tight. I lost a lot of time and ground. I was very dissapointed with the run.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder and train harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Found some shade and tried to stretch out my back. Iced it all day and night.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Back problems

Event comments:

Overall, I was happy with my first OLY race. I was very dissapointed with my run effort. Entering T2, I was confident of a sub 3H finish. A lot of dissapointment when people started passing me on the run. Just wished I could have run a little harder and the back held on for another hour. Looking forward to the next one.

Good job on your first Oly. Being in N. Texas, I wonder how I'd do in an ocean OWS tri. I can sympathize with you on your run dissapointment as I had some weird shoulder pain during the run of my last tri. Looking at your schedule, it looks like you have a couple of months to work out those back issues.
