Overcast
Total Time = 3h 50m 2s
Overall Rank = 76/193
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 7/21
Pre-race routine:

Ate at 4AM 1 cup of oats with rice milk and apple. 1 16Oz cappuccino
Drove to site, setup
Ate 3 Medjol Dates at 8AM - 30 minutes before start (198 calories)
Event warmup:

Small amount of jogging 10 minutes

The Plan for the race was to take a slower pace then I did in the Eagleman 1/2 Iron Man on 9 June 2013. If this was successful I would beat my Eagleman time when scaled by distance for each event keeping the same average speed. My predicted finish time was expected to be 3:54 or faster.
Swim

Water was cold. Difficult to breathe into the water. At the beginning there was a lot of contact with other swimmers. I had a fractured finger and was trying not to get hit or be hit. Got hit lightly on the hand 2 or 3 times. I thought to myself, "Why am I doing this?"
What would you do differently?:

Ranked 112/193 overall and 15/21
Transition 1
  • 03m 32s
Comments:

Taking off wetsuit I forgot to undo the leg zipper and caused a small delay. Put on a long sleeved shirt which caused a minor delay. Put on socks, shoes, glasses, helmet and ran with bike. Ranked 132/193 overall and 12/21 age group in T1
What would you do differently?:

Short sleeve shirt, run faster from swim to bike.
In my age group fastest time was 1:10 and the people finishing in front of me did T1 in between 1:10 and 3:00 minutes with an average for the first 6 of 2 minutes.
I should be able to take at least 1 minute from this time.
1) quicker run in, ??

First loop was in 20 mph, Second loop in 18.6. In one loop you were with the wind going out and against the wind coming back. I could feel that I was pushing a little too hard the first loop based on my plan to go slow, so on the second loop I slowed down and let a few people pass me. That was tough to do!
Nutrition: 1 gel/hr and Hammer Perpeteum. Had 3 bottles with a good amount of one bottle left over

was 90/193 on bike and 9/21 in age group
What would you do differently?:

The plan worked. Maybe go a little faster on the bike, since I had too much left on the run or go faster on the run!
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

8/12 in age group, 100/193 overall The average of the top 6 was 1:24 in age group. It is interesting to see that T2 order was the same as the final finish order? What was with that?
What would you do differently?:

run faster?

Comments:

Run place 49/193 overall and 6/21 in age group.
Too start with I went to the latrine for a long pee - I decided to be comfortable in the run. I knew I didn't want to start too fast and try to negative split the run. I did this
I was searching for the people that I knew who passed me on the bike. This gave a positive attitude through mile 6. I think that after I passed a number of people that I saw pass me on the bike I lost a little focus and slowed down. I didn't see the mile marks and felt a little lost as to how much distance was left in the race. The last part of a mile I went much faster trying to catch anyone in my age group. Passed a guy at the end but he was in a one younger age group.

Nutrition: had 1 gel
and waist belt of 7oz bottles filled with hammer perpeteum. Only took water once after gel at about 3 miles.
What would you do differently?:

When the watch sings the ending song I need to believe it! I should have started the run on the watch immediately so that I knew where I was on the course. The mile markings were not prominent. On the other hand I never looked at my watch for the run to see how fast I was going and just felt my running speed relative to my energy level.

Post race
Warm down:

walked

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Slowed down too much after mile 7. If I had kept the downward progression of min/mile I would have finished about a minute faster. In the last 0.2 miles I went from 8 min/mile to 5:11 min/mile.

The other part is perhaps I started the run too slow at 9 to 8:48 min/mile for the first 2 miles (or I took a really long time to pee!).

Event comments:

This is a good race. Water is cold, but the weather for the bike and run was good.
