Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania
United States
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 2s
Overall Rank = 7/445
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/38
Pre-race routine:

Got there early to get a good spot on bike rack. Set up transition area before going back to car to listen to some music.
Swim
  • 10m 35s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't relax during swim and it shows in my poor time. Swim times were higher this year for everyone because of a longer exit transition.
What would you do differently?:

Not get choppy with my stroke and swim relaxed.
Transition 1
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Still have difficulty with wetsuit getting stuck on heels even after cutting some length off of legs. Guess I'll have to practice removing suit more. I did improve a few seconds over last years T1 time.
What would you do differently?:

Get suit off quicker.
Bike
  • 44m 8s
  • 16 miles
  • 21.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Chain popped off shifting from large to small crank going up last hill. Probably cost me about 30 seconds. Rode hard and strong all the way to T2.
What would you do differently?:

Not much except make sure derailleur is working perfectly.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

T2 was a couple seconds faster than last year. Lost a few seconds fumbling to get shoes on,
What would you do differently?:

Get sneakers on faster.
Run
  • 20m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Took about 1/2 mile for legs to feel normal. Could have pushed just a little bit harder, but I was close to my 5k limit. Happy with my time.
What would you do differently?:

Not much,
Post race
Warm down:

Caught my breath for a minute then grabbed a water and some fruit. Stayed around until the end of the awards ceremony.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

a dropped chain and not relaxing during the swim.

Event comments:

Good local race that draws a lot of entries. Nice that the monies go to help disabled athletes.

I have a pinched nerve in my neck at C6 which is causing a burning pain in the upper shoulder and down the triceps of my right arm. I worry about training and doing long-term nerve damage.

Should I be working on getting faster at running by doing the longer distances and working up slowly over time or run faster for shorter distances now?

I have a sore muscle or nerve on the front of my right leg, from above my knee to waist area, with most of the pain in the middle of my leg. After a run or long walk it starts getting sore.

On the long bike rides of 80+ miles I get very strong pain in my toes. I slow down my pace and I might recover, but when I hit the next hill it is back. Could this be some kind of circulation issue?

I started having trouble a couple months ago with a tightness and almost numbness in my anterior left leg and top of foot during running. It feels sort of dead.

If you are one of those athletes, and the compartments don’t easily expand, the pressure within increases with exercise. This can stress the muscle as well as the nerves and blood vessels.

Is there anything that I can do to lessen the chances of stress fractures. I have had no luck with the doctors I have seen. Some have advised orthotics, some say there is nothing that can be done.
