Ok, this is my first time competing in Chicago and my first Oly. I've heard a few things about this event - anyone have thoughts for a first-timer?

I am in the same boat. I have done 1 sprint and this is my first oly distance. I am training hard and looking forward to it but I would love to hear some tips.

I did hear that there is gravel between the swim exit and T1.

Also my first OLY after 2 sprints this summer. I hear to be sure to slow down on the bike near the exit...you will be going down a exit ramp for LSD, and if you don't slow, you risk crashing into a cement wall. And yes, about 450 yards on the cement sidewalk that runs along the lake until you hit the transition area. Some people bring flip flops etc and place them near the swim exit to put on before they make the trek..my thought--waste of time, suck it up! Good luck on Sunday!

If you have a headlamp, bring it for laying out your transition. You have to set up very early and get out, and it's still completely dark then.

Because of the way they close lanes on Lakeshore Drive, you ride the bike course staying to the left and passing on the right. So practice yelling "on your right" and freaking out your riding partners this week as you pass.

The course orientation they offer at the expo is worth the time if you have never raced the event before.

Go get 'em.

I'm looking forward to it!  I've done about 6 sprints and this is my 1st olympic.  I think I'm gonna bring a pair of old shoes for the swim to bike transition.  I saw one of the female pros do that on TV last year.  I have tender feet.

Good luck everyone!

1. Where will you keep your shoes when you get out of the lake?
2. Is this televised? I want to avoid any "reality TV" moments or be featured on AFV.

I'll take an old pair of shoes and stow them along the exit to the swim (somewhere).  Even if they are stolen....oh, well.

I went to the expo yesterday and took a quick swim in the lake. I am as ready as I am going to be. Time to drink lots of water and take it easy!

Best of luck to everyone!!!
