Richland, Washington
United States
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 16m 43s
Overall Rank = 130/141
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 3/3
Pre-race routine:

Long drive to Richland
Event warmup:

Racked my gear and talked to the other participants.
Swim
  • 11m 45s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had difficulty getting my breathing rhythm going, but once I got it, I was fine and passed several people.
What would you do differently?:

Just need to practice my breathing more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 53s
Comments:

I don't know why this transition took so long. I didn't take the time to dry myself off, other than my feet.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know.
Bike
  • 1h 02m 51s
  • 12 miles
  • 11.46 mile/hr
Comments:

I was not ready for an off-road race. The course beat my body pretty hard, and about 3/4 of the way in, I was pretty worn out. At one point, I got off my bike and walked it through a deep ravine, rather than take a chance on wiping out (a drop-off on one side). I also stopped and let everybody else pass me so if I wiped out, no one would end up on top of me.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more!
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Wore running shoes with my bike. I don't know what I could have done differently here.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know.
Run
  • 56m 44s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 18m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran out of steam halfway through the run. My hips took a pounding on the mountain bike course, and then running along a paved path didn't help. My body just refused to run any more. Running is where I lost this race. My times were comparable with the other two women in my age group, except for my running time, which was twice theirs.
What would you do differently?:

Practice riding off road more and doing off-road to running bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Found a bench and a bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sleep deprived the night before (4th of July--fireworks and sirens all night long!), not enough off road riding practice, and actually not feeling that great before the race even started. However, once the race started, I completely forgot about my upset stomach.

Event comments:

Good race, great volunteers. I think the official ranking (my placing 130/141) includes all of the teams members. I think my actual placing is 130/130.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
