Santa Barbara Triathlon

Overcast
Total Time = 3h 54m 23s
Overall Rank = 230/564
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 31/59
Pre-race routine:

Ate half a cliff bar and drank water.
Event warmup:

Got set-up and wriggled into my wetsuit, stressed over the open ocean swim.
Swim
  • 31m 17s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Nerves and lack of wetsuit training cost me on the swim out, once I got turned and my breathing controlled I turned it up and caught a lot of folks that passed me early.
What would you do differently?:

Working on breathing under stressful conditions. I train in a pool exclusively due to my location and breathing is easy to regulate. I am now simulating the breathing needed for wetsuit swimming and should be much better next time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Very short transition to the ride, I did have my shoes on my bike and successfuly got my right shoe on quickly. My left shoe fought back, but I did get it on without having to stop.
What would you do differently?:

On this short of a transition I should have just wore the shoes.
Bike
  • 1h 54m 17s
  • 34 miles
  • 17.85 mile/hr
Comments:

I stayed in my comfort zone for the ride guarding against blowing up my legs for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Train for short steep hills, make sure my shifters get all my gears clean. My second lowest gear wasn't useable, which impacted my climbing.
Transition 2
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

Because the transition was so short I kept my shoes on and ran with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 22m 18s
  • 10 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run, legs were fine so my plan to "not blow them up" worked. Ran a solid negative split and passed a lot of folks that passed me on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike. Maybe carry my hydration belt, I used the water/gatorade stations and I don't train with gatorade.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, packed up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of wetsuit experience and open ocean swim experience. Just need more time in the saddle to improve my bike.

Event comments:

Great race coordination, everything was on time! Plenty of volunteers (said thanks to many of them as I went by). The gatorade was actually mixed well, I don't drink it but it was diluted enought so as not to be too surgary. Post race not much really going on, but you are in Santa Barbara figure something out! Great Race Highly recommend to anyone thinking about it.
