Swim

  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

Easy to sight on the swim and this was my best swim so far. The wetsuit helped, and I felt I maintained a solid pace throughout. First real attempt at drafting behind other swimmers.
Transition 1
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

Long run from the lake to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Probably nothing, but I did take my time considering that this was my first HIM. Wasn't sure how the bike would go (longer than I have gone before) so wanted to take an extra few seconds to make sure I was settled before heading out on the course. No problems with the wetsuit.
Bike
  • 3h 03m 46s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.28 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt great. The new bike is faster than the old, and my times are improving. Just need to make sure that I continue to get time in the saddle.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing much. Felt great for most of the bike but needed the body glide. Forgot to put it on before the race. Also emptied my water bottle during the first half and missed a later bottle exchange. Need to buy a hydration system.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Had the biked racked right near the bike in entrance. Made transition easy.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure to wipe off feet really well. Did not get all the rocks off my right foot which caused blisters during the run.
Run
  • 2h 02m 6s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Second lap of the run; hit the wall hard.
What would you do differently?:

Blisters really affected the run. Did not take time to wipe off my right foot after getting off the bike, and it was the pebbles in the shoes that caused the blisters. Make sure next time to get all the pebbles off the wet foot before putting on the shoes. Especially important considering that I don't wear socks.

My issue is that I am currently deployed and training outside is proving difficult, especially on the bike. I have found a safe 10km running loop but I am struggling with the bike training.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
