Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Des Moines on Sautrday morning with a whole crew from kansas. Found out Friday night that the race was shortened to a sprint due to flooding. Sucks, but glad they still had the race. Checked in and got the bikes set up on Saturday afternoon, after a very quick spin and jog with the group. Woke up Sunday morning at 4:45, had some dry ass oatmeal and a banana. Got to transition at 6:00, out by 6:45 and sat around and watched the pros for almost 2 hours. AG elites started around 8:30, and my wave was soon after
Event warmup:

Quick warmup swim. Probably 250 yards. Shoulder felt fine, a drastic change from Monday's MRI. Cortisone shots are amazing...
  • 12m 31s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters

Lined up in the second row next to Brett. Mistake. As soon as the gun went off, the group became really compacted and I had a really hard time finding water, not bodies. I honestly don't think my face touched the water for 100 meters... I tried to get outside and find some open water to no avail. Just stuck in the middle swimming all over people.

The group finally broke up after 250 meters, after rounding the only turn buoy, heading towards swim out. I started hammering, and immediately found some separation from the group. There was a small group probably 25 meters ahead that I tried to bridge, but just couldn't. I was felt like I was in a nice groove, so I just kept up the intensity and did my own thing, without letting them slip away.

The course felt a bit long, but not much.
What would you do differently?:

Lined up in the front row, but towards the outside. That way if the group got compacted, I could break outside and get around people. But I was pretty content. Monday I couldn't lift my arm at all.
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s

Long run through transition. Tried to push a bit, without overdoing it. Transition went smoothly, could have probably just ran a bit faster to get out. Shoes already clipped in. No issue with the mount.
What would you do differently?:

run harder. Everything else was fast and practiced.
  • 31m 58s
  • 20 kms
  • 37.54 km/hr

Up to speed good, quickly found a nice cadence, tucked, and just hammered. The course was super flat, only incline was going up a bridge. The downside was all the 180 turns, kinda took away any momentum.

The ride was okay, I felt like I was working hard, but not overdoing it. I did some passing, while also getting passed a bit. Traffic wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, and didn't see any drafting. Marshalls were out like crazy.

Happy with the average, my first 23mph race split (even though there was no elevation gain).
What would you do differently?:

train better
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s

Everything went smooth aka didn't fall off my bike at dismount. Fairly long run out of transition, but I had a great rack spot near the bike in.
What would you do differently?:

run harder
  • 21m 47s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 22s  min/km

Never had it today, really started heating up on the course. My watch wasn't working, so I had no pace feedback and I think that played with me pushing harder. Overall, I am content with the run itself, it was about what I was expecting, although I'd like to see a pace faster than 7 minute miles for a sprint.
What would you do differently?:

Event comments:

My first national championship race. I was upset that the course changed to a sprint because of flooding. I feel like there should have been an alternative route, especially a race with this high caliber. But I was glad it wasn't cancelled and the execution was great.
