Hello BT,

This is my 5th month of sprint tri training (did 1 sprint tri race, so far). I noticed that as I added more volume and intensity to my training, I'm loosing my appetite to eat meat. I could eat 2 meals of meat in a week and the rest of the week I would rather eat tofu, fish, seafood,... ( I could eat oatmeal or eggs everyday). If the only food available is meat, I force myself to eat meat. Holidays are coming, and not looking forward to eat ham, turkey, beef...

Has this happened to you? I wonder if it's age related (I'm almost 50 yrs old, female).

Thanks

Don't force yourself to eat meat. It is unhealthy and heavy on the digestive system.

You can eat quinoa as a sourse of protein, but also nuts, rice with beans give a complete protein. Vegetables give protein too.

If you want I can email you PDF files with recipes that I get in my email every week. They come with a shopping list too so you never have to worry anymore about what is for dinner.

Your palate changes...just go with it. It's also possible that with the increase in fitness training, you are reading up more about diet. There's a lot of anti-meat people out there. If that is making sense to you on some level, then that would also be a good reason for your tastes shifting.

I can understand this. I have also lost my desire to have the occasional frosty malt beverage. I've just embraced it. Anyone know of a good cookbook for tofu and such. I'm afraid to try it as it just sounds a but sketchy. I think the recipe makes a big difference.

I have awesome recipes, but they are not books. They are in PDF file so I'd have to email them. You can also find countless recipes on the internet.

A website that I like really very much is

I dunno, training seems to make me crave protein. My daughter is a vegetarian so we don't tend to eat a lot of meat anyway, but when I'm on my own for dinner I go right to the steaks.

I've been vegan for almost 3 years. I don't miss it, don't need it, and don't crave it.

Do the following.

Read "Finding Ultra" by Rich Roll
Watch - "Forks over knives"

That will give you a start.

And yes, for the record, I eat A TON of food.

I think tastes change throughout our lives. Like another said, go with it granted you're feeling well. I know for me, I am very "meh" about meat, and often go weeks without much at all. Plus it's pricey! (I eat eggs about every day though) .

Except once or twice a year I get mad cravings for Braunschweigrr. So I buy a tube and enjoy it.

Not sure if it's age related.....maybe they're adding something to the meat supply that they're not telling us. >

Doubtful that training alone accounts for this. Sounds like you were already eating little meat before as it was.

Personally, I train a lot and eat a lot of meat.

I only started training consistently at the start of this year (and did my first few tri's ) but as I found I needed to be eating more as I was getting more hungry, I started doing some research and experimented a lot with what I was eating. Also my first year living out of home and cooking for myself which made the adjustment necessary!

I now eat a lot less meat, and no red meat. Still eating chicken and pork once or twice a week, and fish and seafood occasional.

I think the trick is to decide where you stand on ethical issues, and then play around with your diet (whilst researching what you're doing of course!) and see what does and doesn't work for you.

If you don't want to eat meat, then don't eat it. I stopped eating meat in 1991, and I live in Texas.

Before beginning tri training I was vegetarian for years since beginning training I eat fish but still can't handle other meats. I tend to get a stomach ache from them and feel too full. That being said as you go into harder training and longer distances it may become difficult to meet caloric necessities required for training without meat. I wish I could eat it because I have a very difficult time eating enough without it! If you find yourself eating less meat you may want to monitor your overall food intake to make sure you are fueling properly so as not to run into training issues.

Athletes have a different biochemistry than unfit people. Athletes are unlikely to experience an insulin surge that leads to overeating and “getting fat” from enjoying a potato with dinner.

There are tons of great diets out there for people who eat meat, but I can’t find anything for vegetarians. I also find that when I eat healthy, I am hungry all the time.
