Subject: RE: Is SOMA happening in 2015? Cochiti lake, it's a nice reservoir, a bit murky similar to Tempe town lake with similar water temps. Little to no noticable current in the swim section. The swim usually ends at a boat dock. The first thing you'll notice out of T1 is a very steep climb up a boat ramp... about 1/8 mile to get to the main roads for the bike course. The bike course is on NM HWYs, nice fair roads. The steep boat ramp also makes the descent into t2 interesting beacuse if you go too fast you'll run out of room to stop and could end up in the lake.
It is high dessert, hot/dry, about 5,000 ft elevation. Not much around the lake itself as far as ammeneties goes. You have bathrooms, port-a-loos. Albuquerque/Bernalillo has decent low priced lodging. I usually stay in Bernalillo and drive up the lake in 30 minutes when I race there. Santa Fe is another higher priced option, also a 30 minute drive.
I've been to several events there and the Army Corp of engineers has always been very welcoming. The Army Corp of Engineers even went around giving frisbees and swim caps. The People of the Cochiti Tribe have also been welcoming. The reservoir actually is literally on their land, which was flooded to create the reservoir. At any rate, the venue works for a race, Open water/roads/run path... what else do you need? If you want to make a vacation out of it Santa Fe/Albuquerque and beautiful North NM is there for you to play.
Like I said I've done several event s there and will continue to do so. I am very happy that NM is getting a well publicized 1/2 iron distance race. See you there!
