Subject: Is SOMA happening in 2015?
Hey all!

Looking at the Lifetime Tri series and their schedule and I don't see SOMA tri anywhere listed for 2015.

I've heard rumors that the WTC was taking over and turning SOMA into a 70.3, but did this already happen, or did something else happen to the race?

Trying to plan out my race schedule building up to IMAZ .

Anyone have any info?

I emailed Lifetime...here was their response:

"Unfortunately Life Time will no longer be producing the SOMA Half Iron event. This event has indeed been acquired by WTC but that is as far as we know. I am unsure when they plan to hold the race and when they plan to open registration.
I’m sorry I’m not much help!"

Kinda sad since Soma has been around for a while. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Now I have to look for another 70.3 to do in build up to IMAZ! The one that really fits into the schedule is Lake Tahoe - but that race scares me a bit - lol!

I was planning on SOMA as a tune-up race as well. Plus there won't be a half/leadman at Marquee this year. I was really hoping for a couple of HIMs before IMAZ. Can't travel due to a new job so I guess It will just have to be a bunch of Olys this year.

No Leadman either??? Yikes, that's a bummer. Not that I was planning on doing it, but like you, I need a HIM or two to tune things up.

I just saw a notification in email about a HIM in New Mexico...about an 8-9 hour drive from here. In late August. Looks brand new but if I'm desperate, may check it out. Not a fan of New Mexico though, but we will see!

It is pretty to dump the races. Red Rock put on a great race series every year and then Lifetime acquired them.. and now WTC took over Soma and it is not known if it will be a 70.3 or not. I want our small grassroots companies back that put on a great race... care about everyone that enters and is always willing to help.... Sad that there is going to be just a couple games in the triathlon game in the near future.

Somewhere called Cochiti Lake - halfway between Albequerque and Santa Fe.

And it's CHEAP - $140 if you register before Mar 1. Looks a little barren up there, but I'd love to see more pics of the race venue...thinking about it since it's a doable drive from PHX!

Cochiti lake, it's a nice reservoir, a bit murky similar to Tempe town lake with similar water temps. Little to no noticable current in the swim section. The swim usually ends at a boat dock. The first thing you'll notice out of T1 is a very steep climb up a boat ramp... about 1/8 mile to get to the main roads for the bike course. The bike course is on NM HWYs, nice fair roads. The steep boat ramp also makes the descent into t2 interesting beacuse if you go too fast you'll run out of room to stop and could end up in the lake.

It is high dessert, hot/dry, about 5,000 ft elevation. Not much around the lake itself as far as ammeneties goes. You have bathrooms, port-a-loos. Albuquerque/Bernalillo has decent low priced lodging. I usually stay in Bernalillo and drive up the lake in 30 minutes when I race there. Santa Fe is another higher priced option, also a 30 minute drive.

I've been to several events there and the Army Corp of engineers has always been very welcoming. The Army Corp of Engineers even went around giving frisbees and swim caps. The People of the Cochiti Tribe have also been welcoming. The reservoir actually is literally on their land, which was flooded to create the reservoir. At any rate, the venue works for a race, Open water/roads/run path... what else do you need? If you want to make a vacation out of it Santa Fe/Albuquerque and beautiful North NM is there for you to play.

Like I said I've done several event s there and will continue to do so. I am very happy that NM is getting a well publicized 1/2 iron distance race. See you there!

rebranded as IM 70.3 for 2016, but no mention of what's happening this year

I would consider registering if the bike course was different from the normal 3 loops around Tempe...but I don't think it will be.

I would consider doing the relay (bike portion) - would be fun to go out, not swim and really hammer the bike without worrying about a run after :-)!

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
