Sunny
Total Time = 1h 52m 16s
Overall Rank = 256/425
Age Group = F60-64
Age Group Rank = 2/7
Pre-race routine:

Pretty sleepless night for me because of full moon, but felt fine when I got up. Had my coffee, smoothy, warm bath and headed for transition. My heat was next to last so transition closed an hour before the start. Lots of standing around and watching other heats and hydrating.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 27m 11s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Rough swim with wind and incoming tide during first third. Swim time was 5 minutes slower than the year before.
What would you do differently?:

TRAINED. This was my year for marathons so I only got in the water 4 times prior to this race.
Transition 1
  • 03m 34s
Comments:

Think it went decent.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 51m 32s
  • 20 kms
  • 23.29 km/hr
Comments:

I am a weak cyclist, made weaker by no training. My time was 5 minutes slower on this segment than the previous year.
What would you do differently?:

TRAIN. Again, my year for running and only got on the bike 2 times all year. Not a strong or enthusiastic cyclist anyway.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Pretty smooth and quick transition.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 28m 4s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 37s  min/km
Comments:

Awesome run, only 4 sec. a mile slower than my fastest stand alone 5K this year. Felt great after shaking off the tree trunk legs. Passed a lot of people including some of my age group competitors. Ran 2 minutes faster than the year before in same race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, ran a good run portion.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, gatorade, a bagel and some like stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training for the swim and bike portion.

Event comments:

This is a great race in its 5th year and really well organized. The weather (IMO) is fantastic. Nice size at about 1000 total between Oly and Sprint races

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

My thinking was that with three events, I could vary my training enough so it wouldn't grow stale prior to seeing positive results and finding the additional motivation I needed to continue training.

Have a goal when you get into the water. If your purpose is distance, then set your pace for endurance. If your objective is speed, then incorporate drills.
