Subject: 920xt question about live tracking
I received a 910xt for Christmas (yay) but when my husband realized the 920xt offered live tracking, he said we could switch it out if I wanted.

Anyone know if the 920xt can be paired with another phone (my husbands) to track progress during a race if I don't have my phone with me?

The reason why is this:

During training and races, he likes to track my progress and is frustrated that there isn't a great product out there (other than phone apps) that does this. I carry my phone with me during training rides/runs, but at races, I leave my phone with him. During races is where he really wants to know my location so he can be where I will be for support etc.

Been reading about the 920xt and the live tracking looks cool, but after reading the review from DCRainmaker, along with other reviews, I can't figure out if I have to have my phone with me at all times for the live tracking to work. Maybe I'm missing something.

I'm doing IMAZ in 2015 and this would be a great tool to have, but only if he can use the tracking on his phone, not mine.

If it doesn't work, I will stick with the 910. As fun as the 920 sounds, just isn't worth the additional $200 . I've emailed Garmin about this but figured I'd check here to see if anyone knew. Thanks a bunch! Happy training and Merry Christmas!

The phone will need to stay within like 20 feet of the unit for it to work.

The 920xt pairs with your phone via bluetooth, and sends the tracking information to the internet your data connection. So yes, you need to be carrying your phone to collect the data and send it (bluetooth only works in short range); anyone who has an internet-connected device can then receive your tracking data. So your husband can track you with his phone, but only if you are carrying your phone to pair with the watch.

IM doesn't allow you to carry a phone, even for this passive purpose. I'm not sure if they will change their policy on this, but until they do you technically can't use the 920xt for live tracking. It would be useful if you want someone to know where you are on training runs and rides.

There are other cool things about the 920xt worth considering though-- you can send information directly to your phone via bluetooth or wifi, so no need to have an ANT stick to send to a computer. You can also use it to get notifications from your phone when you are training. It also allows for a wider range of variable pool lengths, and has the drill mode for swim workouts.
