Swim
Comments: This was really pleasant. A nice smooth stroke at a good speed, with only a little course deviation. 16c water felt right in the wetsuit, and although I could have given it a bit more speed this was definitely the part I enjoyed most. Includes time out of transition. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: The ride felt really nice. I had a good pace, wasn't quite as fast as I expected uphill, but got good continual cadence on the aerobars the whole way. Since I was saving my legs for the run I didn't go hard on the power or the climb. Includes time out of transition, stopping to help a competitor with a flat (~30s) and a toilet break (~2m). What would you do differently?: Slightly more distance and hill training would have been ideal. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Running into strongish (30km/h) winds wasn't ideal, but really this was always going to be a challenge. I hadn't built the miles for the run. This run was pretty terrible; I started out with a slow and consistent shuffle, and got through the first 5k with just one short walking break, but followed that with a very much walk-jog second 5k. I ended up pacing the second 5k with a person who was just doing the run, and who had not trained at all and was suffering. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: This was my first tri, after making the decision to do one in early January. More than anything else, just two months of training, interrupted in the middle by relationship troubles (exercise stopped for a week). I was nursing my knees after a persistent running injury, and was rather cautious - hadn't run more than 8km in training. I definitely need a lot more to be where I want to be. The Powerade I was drinking did not sit well with my stomach at all. I wanted to throw up on the run. Event comments: A great race, with excellent and friendly organisers and volunteers. Would definitely recommend them if you're in the lower North Island. Last updated: 2015-03-01 12:00 AM
