Overcast
Total Time = 1h 01m 17s
Overall Rank = 3/37
Age Group = M55-59
Age Group Rank = 1/3
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15 AM so that I would eat 3 hours before triathlon start at 7:30 AM
Event warmup:

Jogged for 13 minutes for 1.1 mile. 100% humidity so was sweating at the end of the warm up
Swim
  • 05m
  • 225 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

The pace was on the slow side of about 2 min/100 yds
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

I was the 7th fastest transition time, but the fastest time was about 45s
What would you do differently?:

According to my Garmin it took about 1 minute to quick wipe feet with cloth, put on socks, shoes, helmet and sunglasses. One day I will try no socks!

What would you do differently?:

I compared this to the 2015 Riverwinds sprint triathlon that was in dry conditions and 48°F. At Riverwinds my avg speed was 19.9 mph and avg heartrate was 158 and max of 163bpm. For Brian Ballard the avg speed was 20.9mph with 161 bpm and 167 bpm max. So it appears that I pushed harder on the bike since I went faster and there were more hills on this course than Riverwinds. In addition the temperature was much hotter from 48°F to 75°F. Could I have gone out harder? possibly based on the average speeds of other competitors, but I am uncertain how it would have affected my run performance. At this level of effort, my first mile in my run was much slower than normal (7:30 compared to 6:57 min/mi at Riverwinds)
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s

I was 22nd overall place on this transition? All I had to do was take off helmet and put on running shoes and race belt! What took so long! The fastest times in transition 2 were around 1 minute, so I lost 45s! Based on the Garmin Trace I was stationary from 0:20 to 1:13 which is 53 seconds!
Run
  • 21m 44s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 21s  min/km
Comments:

Again comparing this performance to Riverwinds the heart rate data are similar. In both runs the heart rate starts in the 150s and ends in the low 170's. Riverwinds: 156 - 172 bpm and Brian Ballard: 153 - 177 bpm. But the major difference was in the temperature. This is where it gets complicated, but I used the following 2 sources: Maximum Performance Running site http://maximumperformancerunning.blogspot.com/2013/07/temperature-d... as well as the Temperature and dew point values from weather underground (Rowan's station) http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=K...

Dew Point was 74°F and temperature was 74°F at Brian Ballard. For Riverwinds the dew point was 29°F and temperature was 48°F. OK so that is going from 100% relative humidity to 0% relative humidity!

So following the Max Performance procedure: first add temperature and dew point temperature:
74+74=148 so this is almost 150 which is a 4.5% pace increase in time. Multiplying 6:54 min/mi pace at Riverwinds by 1.045 gives a heat adjusted pace of 7:13 min/mi! This is very close to the 7:09 min/mile Garmin pace for Brian Ballard, but technically I ran faster than predicted using this method by about 5 seconds/mi. So perhaps the two performances are fairly equal when adjusted for the temperature and humidity. But based on the training that I have done, I was hoping for a better performance on the run.
What would you do differently?:

What I would have liked to have done was go faster in the first mile. to at least a 7:10 or 7:00 min/mile pace which would have decreased the average pace to about 7:03 or faster and made more even splits.
Post race
Warm down:

walking for at least 15 muinutes

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and the humidity had an affect. The water on the roads had me be more cautious on the cycle.

Event comments:

This is a great local race. It would be nice to see more people at this race so that you have more help on the run to keep motivated. They only had a water station at the start of the run and for a sprint this was fine for me, but for others that go much slower, they would have needed to bring water with them.

As every veteran athlete can attest, a non-existent or ill planned ‘race meal plan’ will leave you falling far short of your goals or even worse, in the medical tent.
