Cooper Sprint Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
McKinney, Texas
United States
Cooper Fitness Center at Craig Ranch
82F / 28C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 03m 21s
Overall Rank = 25/296
Age Group = M 45-49
Age Group Rank = 2/33
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5am but slept late getting the bikes ready. You'd think I would learn my lesson by now. Left the house around 5:40am and was parked at Cooper by 6am. Transition closes at 6:45am so quickly got body-marked, and set up transition, then picked up chip. Usual pre-race routine (nice facilities).
Event warmup:

No real warm-up - I jogged to and from the restrooms to get warmed up.
Swim
  • 07m 26s
  • 350 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

I really can't complain about this swim - I had very little consistent swim training leading up to this race for probably a year but still managed to swim decent. Got lucky as I didn't get passed at all, and had fairly uneventful passes (passed about 4 people).

This is my 2nd fastest swim split in this race with my PR about 20 sec faster. I think that with a little more swim focus (at least make it to the pool twice a week 3 months prior to the race, I bet I could beat my PR).
What would you do differently?:

Swim more consistently at least 3 months prior to the event.

Comparing past results

2010: 9:28
2011: 7:34
2012: 7:08
2014: 8:00
2015: 7:28
Delta from last year: 32 sec faster
Transition 1
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Decent T1 - probably could've gotten going on the bike faster and took a while to get into my shoes. I have to get comfortable getting up to cruising speed before putting on shoes even though it takes me a little longer.
What would you do differently?:

5th fastest in my AG by 9 seconds. I better rack may have helped and I could've run faster.

2010: 0:54
2011: 1:04
2012: 1:08
2014: 0:42
2015: 0:43

Delta - 1s slower than last year
Bike
  • 31m 48s
  • 12 miles
  • 22.64 mile/hr
Comments:

My legs didn't feel great and I had trouble keeping up a higher cadence - kept ending up just under 90 when I should've been around 95. Did a better job keeping the surges under control and I think I could've pushed a little bit harder.

3rd fastest in my AG and only 30 secs from the fastest time so I was within range of taking top honors.
What would you do differently?:

Get more sleep and spin a little quicker. Probably had an opportunity to push harder but it was 15deg+ warmer than last year so having almost identical Normalized Power was a good thing

2014: 31:54
2015: 31:48

Delta: 6 sec faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

6th in AG -14sec behind fastest so I lost time here. Took too long to put on shoes and really should have run out of T1 faster.
What would you do differently?:

Get shoes on quicker. I did remember to unbuckle helmet while running so that was good.

2010: 0:45
2011: 0:50
2012: 0:56
2014: 0:44
2015: 0:51

Delta: 7 sec slower than last year
Run
  • 22m 35s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 31s  min/km
Comments:

This is where I think I left a lot on the table. I let the heat get to me mentally and just could not get my legs going. I didn't have anyone to race until about 750m from the finish. Could not get under 7:00/mile pace for too long and none of my 0.5 mile splits were under 7:00/mile.

4th fastest in AG but this was my 2nd slowest 5K (only my very first time when I started doing triathlons was slower). I think that around 40-45 sec faster would've been a better time.
What would you do differently?:

My run training wasn't there this year due to the gout flare-up in March that just prevented me from running for almost 2 months. Would've loved to see what I could've done with my fitness in early March when I had PR'd 5K and HM.

2010: 24:01
2011: 21:48
2012: 20:41
2014: 21:46
2015: 22:35
Post race
Warm down:

not much of a warm-down

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training on swim and run. However, I did finished 2nd in AG even though I was anywhere from 4th through 6th on each individual event. Was most consistent among the top and I was only 65 sec behind the winner. I think that if I had run better and focused just a little bit more on the bike, an AG win would have been possible.

However, this is typically a competitive local race and first time that I had a podium finish in all the times I've raced this.

Event comments:

Still my favorite local race. Great facilities and best pool around here.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
