What would you do differently?:

I swam with clear goggles because the sun had not come up yet when I left transition. Definitely needed tinted / polarize goggles for the long back stretch into the sun.
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

I had the same setup as normal but I felt a little disorganized for some reason. Ended up putting on my shoes and helmet out of order and then I felt like I was forgetting something. Probably wasted 30 seconds.

Comments:

It was a hot day. Heat doesn't bother me much and didn't slow me down. I am just slow. I usually run better on training days that are over 90 degrees but even on fresh legs I can only run a 50 minute 10k.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk to the food tent, get lots of cold water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am slow.

Event comments:

This was a very well organized race. Lots of good swag including nice finisher medals for all including at the sprint level. Several world class pros raced today. It was good to be that close to top pros at a "local" race.

Course: The course makes a right out of Grays Lake Park into down town Des Moines onto a 3 lane road (in each direction) that is close to traffic in both directions. This is a very nice road with plenty of room to ride anywhere you want. At about 5 miles, there is a turnaround that heads most of the way back to the park before heading out of town after passing through Water Works Park. Water Works Park has nice roads that wind through the park. They were fun to ride. Once outside of town, the wind was very noticable. From about Mile 12-19, there was a head wind most of the way. I caught a bit of a tail wind going up a 2.2% grade and was able to maintain 22 mph going up the hill. After the tunaround, I was only able to hit 20 mph going down the same hill. I have never gone faster up a hill. The wind was strong to say the least.
