Went out for a long ride last night.. is it just me or are there a LOT of bugs out lately?

I don't know what it's like in other areas of the country... but here in Iowa they are apparently breeding like mad.. it's these tiny bugs about the size of mosquitoes that (thankfully) don't bite.. but when you ride 40 miles through a constant haze of them, inhaling them the whole time, it gets annoying!  Except for the inhalation I found it kind of funny though.

When I was done with the ride, I was literally COVERED in bugs.. my sunglasses looked like my car windshield after a long summer interstate drive, and my arms/legs were peppered.

If I were the type of person who was squeamish about bugs this would probably really gross me out.  I'm new to cycling.. is this usually a problem?  Or are there just an abnormal amount of bugs out right now?

All I can say is I identify strongly. I live in south Georgia, and we have more than our share of gnats. On some summer evenings I know I swallow more than a few. For here, its just a fact of life. At least on the bike you outpace the various swarms, on the run they follow you around the entire time.

I just wish those bugs came in sour cream and onion flavor.

It never fails.  No matter how much I adjust my sunglasses, on little bug always finds it's way right into my eye!

I don't ride fast enough to squash bugs, I just tend to bruise them...

We do have alot of bugs out right now in Indiana too, I've noticed.

Yeah I think it must be something about the time of year or something.. cause I'm not talking about swarms here, I'm talking about miles of constant haze, where it literally feels like its raining for miles at a time.  There were a few areas that it let up (usually on the tops of hills) but I was surprised at the continued presence of the clouds over my whole ride.

Did a 16 mile ride on the C&O canal last night and for the first few miles it was bug-free. Then all of a sudden we hit swarm after swarm of gnats. They'd hit your sweat soaked skin and stick, get in your eyes so as you can't see, but hey other than that it was a great ride

Got home later, and watched as they all washed down the drain in the shower. Gotta love it!

I have been riding a bike path along a river and it seems the every day the bugs have been getting worse.  I ended up with them in both ears, one eye and what seemed like hundreds in my mouth.  But they are better than the bee that got caught between my chinstrap and temple on Sunday.  I was only 100 feet from the end of my ride and I got stung.  Felt like a cattle prod or tazer, almost fell off the bike.

That video is so bizzare - but funny.  "the good times are over"  I am going to have to remember that the next time I ride through a bunch of bugs.  (soon probably - they are everywhere)

I can identify. Last year I had a bee fly into my mouth at Wash Park. Damn thing bit me when I spit it out. Guess I shouldn't have been so nice.
