Swim
Comments: the water was a bit choppy so it looked like they re-designed the course to keep it inside of a few protected areas. was a bit confusing as it was a little zig-zaggy. there was some chop, had a few times where I had a mouthful of water. the water was very crowded the whole way. Could be because there were some narrow passages with rock walls and the buoys. Could be because there were just a lot of people out there. lots of body contact. What would you do differently?: try and push a little harder once I settled into my pace. but for me, trying to save one minute on the swim isn't as important as keeping my heart rate down and tiring out too quickly Transition 1
Comments: felt pretty good getting out of my wetsuit but got a lot of sand on my feet. What would you do differently?: wear my booties. they aren't very comfortable but with a beach setting it would have kept my feet sand free and warmer Bike
Comments: There were some choppy roads in port chester, but not too bad as long as you paid attention. unfortunately, the road was quite packed with people and I almost got knocked over when a guy cut me off and clipped my front wheel. "Claire's climb" was a steady uphill, nothing too painful. kept myself in my seat and just spun my way up. saw a few people struggling so felt like I was keeping myself in good shape here. What would you do differently?: go a little harder at times. felt like there were some spots I should have opened it up a bit more. maybe saved some of my energy NOT getting pissed off at the guy that almost knocked me over. wish the race official saw that. one guy complemented me on how I kept my balance, and kept my cool. but for the most part, I was happy with my result. Transition 2
Comments: I had to pee pretty bad. probably should have just done it as I was walking my bike out to the mount location, but the porto potties were on the other side of the transition spot, so otherwise, I was happy with my T2 time. pissing cost me 2:30 (yes, I looked) What would you do differently?: pee somewhere else Run
Comments: relatively easy course, only a few hills. having heel issues for the few weeks leading up to the race, I was a bit concerned. I really just wanted to take it easy so as to not exacerbate the injury. I walked at times to keep the heart rate down and when my heel got sore. wasn't happy with my time, but given my limitations, I cant be upset with it. Post race
Warm down: had a few slices of pizza and a pumpkin beer. What limited your ability to perform faster: 1) too many athletes, maybe if this was about 15% less people, it would have been easier. slowed me up in the narrow swim and definitely caused problems on the bike. also in the mount/dismount areas were a little crowded. 2) my heel injury. I'm just glad I made it without further injury. 2 weeks later, as I felt much better, I had the same run pace for a half marathon. which should say that this pace was far too slow. 3) I pee too much. peeing when I swim is one thing, but I should have just pissed on the bike. Event comments: This is a good race with a wide array of people there. I definitely enjoyed it. it wont fit my calendar in 2016, but will certainly be a race I would consider any other time. I'd suggest that if they are going to have this many people racing, to self seed in the water and make the course a little wider. Great police support and solid volunteer support.
