Pre-race routine:

Got to the race at 5:30 to volunteer. The race director let some my teammates (as well as myself) enter the race late if we agreed to come early to volunteer. Started out setting up the swim to T1 chute, putting up a canopy that kept getting blown over, body marking, etc.
Swim
  • 06m 41s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was cold. I opted not to wear a wetsuit as it was only a 400 meter swim. I was in the third wave, first blue cap out of the water. I hadn't swam since Timberman so I have to accept my time/pace. It's not that good but I finally have a "1" next to my name for a swim (age group), but I won't be totally happy until there is a 1 for over-all. It was a straight shot across the lake but even though I had my clear goggles on it was hard to see the buoys because they were foggy. I feel like I went a little wide but still stayed between the buoys.
What would you do differently?:

Stay straighter.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Long run on some pretty rough asphalt to my bike. I racked all the way down by the mounting area, I wasn't too keen on running on the slippery pavement in bike shoes with cleats. I haven't mastered the flying mount with my shoes already clipped in yet. Coming out of the water John (kleinrider) was right in front of me from the previous wave. I don't think he was too happy about that haha.
Bike

  • 21.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Man, I wish I could have hammered this ride more that I was able to. Tropical Storm Ernesto was in town wich made for cautious riding necessary. There were a few little hills that suprised me a bit, but nothing too bad. Strong gusts of wind were fun though (sarcasm). I didn't get passed, which I liked.
What would you do differently?:

Wish harder for Trpoical Storm Ernesto to go away.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Not too bad, I don't know why I can't be quick like this at longer races. I also didn't wear socks, which could have something to do with it. y feet, notably my right big toe, don't like me for it right now.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 22m 3s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm kind of suprised with my run. I didn't feel like I was running as fast as I was, I felt lke I was on my 9 minute mile pace, but I guess not. It went by quicker than I expected. I'm pleased with it, but I also think I can push harder. I didn't feel like I wanted to die at the end and was hardly sore.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Watched the rest of my teammates finish. Got some food and checked results. I won a certificate for a new Xterra wetsuit durig a raffle. I like my Ironman Stealth just fine, it's not damaged and has given me some pretty decent swims, so I gave the certificate to one of my teammates who doesn't have a wetsuit and is always cold when we swim at the lake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather.

Event comments:

It was a relly crappy day weather-wise, but overall everything worked out great. Nice cap to the end of the season with an AG win :)

Great report. And, I know I already told you this a thousand times, but GREAT RACE! It was so much fun watching you come out of the water first, then back from the bike first, then back from the run first. Cool stuff. Enjoy your week off!

Do you realize that you were done the entire race before I was out of T2????  Darn Steve!!!

Next year I EXPECT to see sub 1 hour for sprints from you!!!  HAHA!!!

can't wait for when you finish 1-overall!!!

One thing though, you need to practice body marking more often!  I mean...to run out of ink in the middle of the job?

Nice job out there. Yeah that swim needs some work, when you blew past me (with my three minute head start), you weren't going fast enough to pull a skier. Why didn't you go with the elite wave? That may have pushed you to a #1 and you certainly kept up them overall. Nice win!

You were one of the guys who flew past me on the bike!! Those are great splits in nice weather, let alone what we raced in. See you around next year!

Great job once again Steve, and your right i wasn't to happy to see you on the beach when i got out of the water...   very classy move giving your free wetsuit to Katie.

I just saw the results today i missed 3rd place in my age group by 8 seconds.    Would have been my very first age group placing.  Oh well..
