Mooloolaba, Queensland
Total Time = 3h 47m 59s
Overall Rank = 1634/1650
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 124/126
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4 and had a home made cycling energy bar/flap jack and a coffee. Got my gear ready and myself and my mate were driven down to transition at 5:30 by the missus. Compulsory Saturday bike rack so just had to set up transition.
Event warmup:

It's a 15 minute walk to the swim start and I had a 7:18 kick off so we just headed to the start and watched a few wave starts. Not much said between us as I was a bit nervous as it is my first full on ocean swim longer than about 500m.
  • 46m 52s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 07s / 100 meters

Speed wise i am, and have always been, very slow but I can swim all day and wasn't taxed at all. Just seemed to take a lifetime. The averages noted are average for me.
What would you do differently?:

Fitness was good but need to work on form. 95% of my training is done on a tether so that might be affecting my form. Was slower than expected in my last 2 tris despite doing more training.
Transition 1
  • 04m 46s

Not much to report here. Took my time and all went smoothly.
  • 1h 33m 32s
  • 40 kms
  • 25.66 km/hr

Not as windy as 2012. Took it easy on the way out expecting strong winds on the way back but they weren't too bad. Could have went harder first half but might have affected my run more. Had maybe 2 flapjacks spread over the first 2/3rds of the ride.
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s

Same as before. Had 2 gels.
  • 1h 20m 42s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 04s  min/km

3 killer hills here too (for me at least). Run fitness hasn't been there for a while so I always intended to run/walk just picking my targets as I went. Worked out fine. Was feeling the heat by the end, as was everybody. Saw a few fit looking people in club suits having to take walk breaks so that helped with my mind set.
