Pre-race routine:

Rushed around, packet pickup closing as I was in line so at least I was in line. Left sunglasses back in my car... half a mile away. Was raining so bike helmet number turned into mush, scrapped it. Got transition set up, helped some lady with her run belt... and another racer whose rear calipers had been bumped over and brake was scrubbing her wheel... guess I looked like a bike mechanic. :) Happy to help though.
Event warmup:

I was just happy to get my transition set up and was in the water a few minutes before 8 for a couple 100 yards before my wave went off.
Swim
  • 25m 30s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

Last weeks OWS was an experience with some rough water and white caps, this was much more calm and I started out easy and built for the last leg. I wasn't really warmed up to start out with... early season race. Was second out of the water out of my wave.
What would you do differently?:

I was going through the first two waves a lot on the last leg and zig zagged a bit. The short sighting mark was a waving fluorescent orange thing and a swimmer I was catching had a wet suit with the same color sleeves.. funny but had me going a little nuts wondering why I was seemingly having a hard time sighting straight.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Went well... right ankle/wet suit off was a bit slow but I'm being picky.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 24s
  • 30 miles
  • 23.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went well. Billed as a tough course but I didn't get out of my saddle but once and I did that just to get off my saddle. Kept a bit in check since the run was billed as pretty tough.
What would you do differently?:

I race this one again, I hammer it a bit more. Left a mph or two out there.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

T2 went well
What would you do differently?:

T2 went well... my daughter mentioned another guy came around the corner on his pedal ready to dismount... LOL I pedaled a bit down the chute, flying dismount went off fine. :)
Run
  • 44m 35s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 28s  min/km
Comments:

Mentally this course beat me or maybe yesterday finally caught up with me. I didn't race the run I just hung on... not a fan of hilly run course and this one is nothing but. :)
What would you do differently?:

If I do this one again knowing what I'm getting into will be a bit of an edge... race it next time!! Not spend the previous day travelling and touring colleges... tiring day.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing special, stopped running and being done is always a good feeling.

Event comments:

I spent the day before traveling and touring UNC at Chapel Hill and Duke... long day and I was tired coming in. Not an A race so no big deal but I'd have preferred to be better rested coming into an Oly with a long bike and tough run course. Race went real well on an even but not super hard effort. Felt good going through the motions, transitions, etc.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.
