Clermont, Florida
United States
Sommer Sports
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 09m 38s
Overall Rank = 101/410
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 14/33
Pre-race routine:

Woke up as scheduled with plenty of time to spare. Packed all my gear well the night before and headed out.
1 Banana
1/2 PBJ
Event warmup:

Nothing. Just got in water to wade around
Swim
  • 08m 32s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'll need to start at the back of the pack or on the outside edge next time. Too much bunching up and getting hit to keep a straight line
What would you do differently?:

Start back a bit to allow the bulk of the guys to get out of the way.
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

Fumbled with my race number and getting my helmet on this time
Bike
  • 32m 54s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.06 mile/hr
Comments:

I'd like to see my fitness increase to keep my HR down in the low 150's. The hills on this course are not until the last quarter of the bike leg and you need your stamina at the ready to make it through well enough. Definitely benefit from time in the saddle for this course.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

A bit better in T2 this time around. I can still do better with my socks and shoes
Run
  • 24m 31s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Turned it on well enough for Mile3 but I had a hiccup during Mile2 that I should be fixing. I need to make sure and pace for a 7:00min/mile pace on Mile3 instead of 7:30min/mile.
What would you do differently?:

Pacing changes will help out but it was pretty hot and humid. I should be able to "Race" my previous times now that I've got some course specific entries in my Spark
Post race
Warm down:

Plenty of water poured on to help cool down along with some watermelon. I cooled off and stabilized my HR pretty quickly this time around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just now getting my training effect into play so I'm ok watching my performance gains play out.

Event comments:

This race and Series is highly participated and the fact that they have the surrounding community and bike course available makes this a great Sprint to do. Regardless of what people like to hear themselves complain about (i.e. Timing results availability, early bike removal from Transition, etc.)

I thought of all the times I didn’t attempt something I wanted to do because I was too afraid of trying something new or of failing completely.

At one of my last swim sessions the week of my first Ironman, one of my training partners told me how she was envious..."your first Ironman is fun, you have no pressure and no expectations!"
