Sommer Sports

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 07m 41s
Overall Rank = 67/386
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 14/38
Pre-race routine:

Packed better the night before and hit the road with plenty of time to spare.
1 Banana
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 08m 26s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I definitely had a better/smoother swim this time around. Hardly any bumping or clashes with other guys in my wave. I pushed out a little too wide in the first leg and could have gone on a tighter line to the first turn bouy.
What would you do differently?:

See if I can find an inside line to first bouy.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Much better T1 from Race #2. My gear clipped on really well this time and I was out of Transition quicker.
Bike
  • 32m 45s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Wow! My HR was really stable throughout the entire course and kept it in the low 150's as desired and only peaked at 155 ("average") during the hilly Mile8 & 9 as expected!
What would you do differently?:

We'll see what another couple of weeks of training result in.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Much better effect in T2 this time. I'll see if using a towel to dry off feet will help with socks and shoes next time.
Run
  • 22m 55s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Much better pacing this time from the onset. I got down to 7:12min/mile average for Mile3 so I'm almost on target for my 7:00/mile pace. I'm setting my Spark to "Race" mode for Race #4 coming up in Sept.
Post race
Warm down:

Easy to cool down and get my HR normalized this time. I definitely pushed the pace from the onset on the Run but I didn't have after-effects from the effort.

Event comments:

The/my race went off without a hitch once again. It's good to have 3 races under my belt at the same venue to see my improvements. I have gotten better in every metric that matters so I'm happy to see the progress. Looking forward to Race #4 where I want my run to stand out even if my Swim or Bike don't improve or even decline.

At one of my last swim sessions the week of my first Ironman, one of my training partners told me how she was envious..."your first Ironman is fun, you have no pressure and no expectations!"
