Sandusky, Ohio

Total Time = 5h 15m 49s
Overall Rank = 36/327
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 4/25
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5, ate a quest bar and sipped on some gatorade. Got dressed and packed up the hotel. Drove over and setup transition area. Stood around for about 90 minutes before getting the wetsuit on and getting in line.
Event warmup:

  • 45m 17s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards

Rough swim, slowest to date. Kicked in the face a couple of times, had someone unzip my wetsuit. Had to sit up and re-zip while treading water -- that's a first.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more than 3 times in the last 2 months.
Transition 1
  • 05m 20s

Time includes 1/2 mile run from swim exit to transition in. Wet suit peelers were great, legs cramped immediately when I tried to stand up, though. Otherwise went from 165 out of the water to 120 exiting transition.
  • 2h 45m 52s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.26 mile/hr

Pushed too hard through the middle of the course, got eaten up by some of the puncher hills that don't really show up on the course elevation maps. Also fought with the wind for the majority of the second half. Really disappointed with this effort. I think more than physical, I mentally fell apart between 30 - 45 when my back started to tighten up.
What would you do differently?:

I trained well up until about 3 weeks to go, then hit some life events that prevented appropriate training. I knew the second half of the course was going to be rough. I should have sat back and tried for an even tempo instead of pushing early.
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s

Fought with getting the back tire in the rack stand a little longer than I hoped. Said a few words to my friend who hit transition right when I did.
What would you do differently?:

Any time T2 is under a minute, I'm happy.
  • 1h 38m 36s
  • 13.3 miles
  • 07m 25s  min/mile

Surprising got really hot with no cloud cover on the course. Took water at every aid station, dumped ice down the shirt. Right from the start my knees felt fried from the bike, so this was a conservative effort trying to hold 7:20's as best I could. Never felt like I shook off my bike legs and got into the running groove. Fought cramping with shot bloks and a honey waffle -- honey waffle does it again.
What would you do differently?:

I didn't get to train bricks really at all this training cycle due to time and family constraints. Really happy with this run all things considered. Even found a little energy at the end of the day to drop into the low 6:00's for the last 0.5 mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank a Powerade and a bottle of water. Talked with family and friends. Watched my friend cross the finish line. Happily finished with a PR of ~8-9 minutes, especially having a rough swim, blowing up on the bike, and putting the run on cruise control. Can't help but wonder what could have been with consistent training ...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training consistency all around.
1 long bike ride (> 2 hours) in the last 4 weeks before the race
2 long runs ( > 90 minutes) in the last 4 weeks before the race
3 swims (any) in the last 4 weeks before the race

Not a recipe for success.

Event comments:

Rev3 events have been great, especially compared to other organizer races that I attempted earlier this summer. Much more family friendly, approachable, and the volunteers were great. The post-race food (hot dogs, hamburgers) was still rough, but better than taco bar from 3 years ago. Maybe it's just me, my stomach was off for the 60-90 minutes following the race, stuck to liquids.
